Peoria Chiefs News Release

Comstock Park, MI - The Peoria Chiefs and West Michigan Whitecaps were suspended by rain tied 4-4 in the middle of the third innings Saturday night. The game will resume Sunday at 1:00 p.m. Eastern time and play to completion. The game originally scheduled for Sunday will follow and be a seven-inning contest.

The game could not have started much worse for the Chiefs who left a runner at third in the top of the first inning and then watched as the Whitecaps took a 4-0 lead. Jamie Johnson led off the bottom of the first in a slight drizzle with a single to left against Chiefs' ace Trey McNutt. After a strikeout, Wade Gaynor reached on an error by Matt Cerda at third and Jordan Lennerton blooped a single to center to load the bases. West Michigan took a 1-0 lead as Avisail Garcia singled to center and added to the lead when Ronnie Bourquin drew a bases loaded walk. Jae-Hoon Ha made a great running catch in the gap on a Michael Rockett fly ball for the second out but Lennerton scored from third on the play for a 3-0 Caps lead. Chris Sedon capped the inning with a RBI single when his pop up fell down the right field line to score Garcia. Only one of the runs was earned against McNutt, who began the game third in the Midwest League with a 1.70 ERA.

The Chiefs came right back in the second inning against Ramon Lebron. With one down Ha lifted a fly ball to deep center that got over the head of Johnson and rolled to the wall. As Ha dove head-first into third base with a triple, the cutoff throw from Hernan Perez sailed into the Chiefs dugout allowing Ha to score for a 4-1 game.

Peoria tied the game in the third in a steady downpour against Lebron. Cerda singled with one out and DJ Fitzgerald hit a line drive homer to left-center to cut the deficit to 4-3. It was the second homer of the roadtrip for Fitzgerald and third of the season. After a strikeout, Ha drew a walk, stole second and moved to third on a wild pitch. Mario Mercedes tied the game with a single down the right field line to complete the comeback. Mercedes also stole second and moved to third on an error before Lebron struck out Charles Thomas to end the inning.

The rain picked up between innings and the tarp was put on the field at 8:10 Eastern time. The game was officially suspended at 8:56 p.m. and will be resumed with the Chiefs in the field Sunday afternoon with a yet to be announced hurler facing Whitecaps left-fielder Michael Rockett to start the bottom of the third.
