Dayton Dragons News Release
Dayton, Ohio - Henry Rodriguez hit a two-run home run as the Dayton Dragons defeated the Clinton Lumber Kings 7-5 on Saturday night before a crowd of 8,715 at Fifth Third Field. The win was the second straight in the series for the Dragons, who will go for a sweep of Clinton on Sunday.
Rodriguez's home run highlighted a four-run fifth inning for the Dragons. Trailing 5-3, Rodriguez drilled a two-run home run off the left field foul pole to tie the game. Chris Richburg restarted the rally with a hit to center and scored on a double to left by Josh Garton. Garton scored on an RBI single to left by Frank Pfister to give the Dragons a 7-5 lead.
Dayton relievers Blair Carson and Chase Ware combined to throw four scoreless innings to close out the Dayton win.
Clinton took an early lead with two runs in the top of the first inning without benefit of a base hit. Dragons starting pitcher Jacob Johnson issued back-to-back walks to start the game and both runners eventually scored on a pair of RBI infield ground outs.
The Dragons battled back with three runs in the third inning to take the lead. Mark Fleury started the inning with a double over the head of the right fielder. Two batters later, Fleury scored on a hard single to center by Shane Carlson. A balk brought in the tying run and Chris Richburg's double to the left field wall brought in the third run of the frame as Dayton took a 3-2 lead.
Clinton scored three runs in the top of the fifth to take a brief 5-3 lead. The key hit in the inning was a two-out, two-run single by James Jones. Dayton rallied with the four-run bottom of the fifth to close out the scoring.
Dragons starting pitcher Jacob Johnson worked the first five innings, allowing three hits and five runs (two earned) with three walks and five strikeouts to earn the victory. Ware pitched a scoreless ninth, stranding two, to earn his third save.
The Dragons finished with 11 hits. Rodriguez, Richburg, and Fleury each had two hits.
Dayton (23-33) will wrap up the home stand at Fifth Third Field on Sunday at 2:00 p.m. against Clinton. Pedro Villarreal (3-3, 3.28) will start for Dayton against Clinton's Erasmo Ramirez (3-2, 1.90).
