Great Lakes Loons News Release

Beloit, Wisconsin - The Beloit Snappers racked up 16 hits over the course of two games and held the Loons to one run in 14 innings en route to a doubleheader sweep on Sunday afternoon at Pohlman Field.

Beloit took game one with a 4-0 shutout and never trailed in game two, either, as the Snappers won 3-1 going away. The Loons fall to 7-14 on the season with their fifth and sixth straight losses, respectively. The Loons never lost more than five in a row last season. Great Lakes also drops to 1-9 on the road and 0-6 against the Midwest League Western Division. After a 6-6 start to the season, the Loons are 1-8.

Beloit opened an early 2-0 lead on the Loons and lefty starter Michael Boyle (L, 1-2) in game one (first pitch at 11:34 a.m. CDT). Left-handed hitter Brett Siddall drove the first run of the day home on an RBI single in the first and one inning later, right-hander Jose Chavez plated a run on a groundout to second.

Beloit's big inning occurred in the fifth when the two, three and four hitters each rattled off hits against Boyle to extend the Snappers' lead to 3-0. Boyle exited the game with runners on the corners and one out in the inning. An RBI single up the box by righty Steven Pallares off right-handed reliever Gavin Pittore pushed the Beloit lead to 4-0.

The Loons best chance to rally passed by in the sixth with the bases loaded and one out. After a call to the bullpen, lefty reliever Jared Lyons struck out fellow lefty Edwin Rios and induced a pop fly from left-hander Matt Jones to strand the bases full.

Right-hander Kyle Friedrichs started game one for the Snappers and took home the win to move to 2-1.

Again in game two, Beloit scored first, this time on a sacrifice fly in the first by Oakland A's prospect Skye Bolt, a switch-hitting outfielder. The Loons rallied in the top of the second when lefty Brant Whiting smoked a double to the base of the batter's eye in center field. Jones, the 6-foot-7 first baseman, scored on the two-bagger after he reached on a bunt single earlier in the frame.

It was the only Loons' run of the day. The Snappers snapped the 1-1 tie in the bottom of the fourth on Siddall's second RBI single of the day, this one off right-handed starter, Nolan Long (L, 1-2). A solo home run in the fifth by left-hander Justin Higley, his second career home run against Great Lakes, provided an insurance run for Beloit. Right-hander Boomer Biegalski (W, 3-0) stayed perfect on the season with a six-inning, six-strikeout effort while righty Cody Kurz took home his third save. Kurz allowed one hit in his only inning of work.

The Loons return home to open a six-game homestand against the western division. Quad Cities (Astros) arrives in town for a three-game set that kicks off Monday night at 7:05 p.m. EDT with pregame coverage at 6:35 p.m. on ESPN 100.9-FM.
