Quad Cities River Bandits News Release
DAVENPORT, IA. - The Quad Cities River Bandits walked in two runs in the seventh, but stranded the bases loaded in a 3-2 loss to the West Michigan Whitecaps in game one of the scheduled doubleheader on Sunday afternoon at Modern Woodmen Park. Rain fell upon the field shortly after game one finished and game two was canceled. The squads will not make up the canceled contest this season.
The River Bandits (10-13) entered the final frame of game one trailing 3-0 to the Whitecaps (11-11). After a leadoff fly out, the next three Bandits batters knocked singles to load the bases. Antonio Nunez worked a two-out walk to score Brooks Marlow. Johnny Sewald followed with a free pass to score Aaron Mizell, making it a one-run game. Jake Shull (2) got Osvaldo Duarte to strike out, saving the 3-2 win for West Michigan.
Burrows (1-1) dominated for West Michigan in game one against Quad Cities. The 2015 first round pick shutout the Bandits over 5 2/3 innings, allowing only two hits in the winning effort while striking out two.
The Whitecaps scored all the runs they would need in the third inning. David Gonzalez worked a leadoff walk and Rashad Brown moved him to third with a single. Gonzalez would score the first run of the game on a passed ball. Derek Hill singled and Will Maddox followed with an RBI-single, scoring Brown. Will Allen loaded the bases with the second walk of the frame and Shane Zeile knocked a RBI-Sacrifice fly to give West Michigan a 3-0 advantage.
Justin Ferrell (0-1) made his first appearance this season for the River Bandits in game one and started strong. The right-hander did not give up a hit in his first two innings of work, but struggled in the third inning. Ferrell took the loss, allowing three runs on three hits over 4 2/3 innings. Zac Person struck out a season-high four batters over 2 1/3 innings of relief for the Bandits.
