West Michigan Whitecaps News Release
DAVENPORT, IA - The West Michigan Whitecaps were only able to play one of their two scheduled games Sunday afternoon, but earned a 3-2 victory over the Quad Cities River Bandits at Modern Woodmen Park.
The Whitecaps struck for all three of their runs in a third inning featuring a run-scoring single from Will Maddox and sacrifice fly from Shane Zeile to take a 3-0 advantage. Meanwhile, starting pitcher Beau Burrows (1-1) was sensational in allowing just a pair base hits and striking out two in a career-high 5.2 innings before giving way to the bullpen. In the seventh and final inning of Game 1, reliever Gerson Moreno walked in a pair of runs before manager Andrew Graham called on right-hander Jake Shull with the bases loaded and two outs and River Bandits shortstop Osvaldo Duarte at the plate. Shull caught Duarte with a called third strike to end the contest.
Before the Game 2 was scheduled to begin, steady rains swept through Downtown Davenport, forcing an hour-long rain delay and an eventual cancellation of the second game.
Burrows earned his first victory as a Whitecap, while Quad Cities starting pitcher Justin Ferrell (0-1) took his first loss for allowing all three Whitecaps runs in 4.2 innings. The Whitecaps return home with an even 11-11 record, while the River Bandits fall to 10-13. Rashad Brown led the Whitecaps at the plate, going 2-for-3 with a double and run scored in the contest.
