Loons Long for Series Opening Win
April 27, 2018 - Midwest League (MWL1)
Great Lakes Loons News Release
SOUTH BEND, Ind. - On a cold, rain soaked night in South Bend, the Great Lakes Loons bats were silenced through eight innings and their two-run 9th inning rally was not enough to erase a five run deficit. The Loons ultimately fell 5-2 in game one of a three game series against the South Bend Cubs.
The Cubs (9-9) were victorious due, in part, to excellent pitching by right handed starter Javier Assad. Assad (W, 3-0) worked quickly through five scoreless innings ceding just four total baserunners. After Assad, Tyler Thomas (S, 1) was just as good striking out seven Loons in his four innings out of the Cubs bullpen.
The Loons (5-14) avoided the shutout by eventually getting to Thomas in the 9th inning with RBI knocks from Carlos Rincon and Marcus Chiu. Great Lakes starter Melvin Jimenez (L, 0-3) surrendered just three hits, but one was a lead-off triple to Roberto Caro in the 1st and another was a solo homerun to Miguel Amaya in his fourth and final inning.
An expected pouring rain started in the 7th inning with Loons reliever Leo Crawford on the hill. Crawford, who worked through his first 3 1/3 innings scoreless then faced off against Austin Filiere in the 8th inning. During the plate appearance, Crawford called on Loons athletic trainer Chris McNeely and pitching coach Bobby Cuellar, who immediately called to the bullpen removing Crawford from the game with an apparent injury.
It was the quickest nine-inning game of the season for the Loons taking just two hours, 19 minutes.
Game two against the Cubs is Saturday with a scheduled first pitch time of 7:05 p.m. EDT. Listen to radio coverage on ESPN 100.9-FM with pregame coverage beginning at 6:35.
The Great Lakes Loons have been the Single-A partner of the Los Angeles Dodgers since the team's inception in 2007.
