Bees Infielders Match Each Other's Home Run Efforts; 10-5 Road Win Gets Bees Closer to First Place
April 27, 2018 - Midwest League (MWL1)
Burlington Bees News Release
Cedar Rapids, IA. - The Burlington Bees haven't reached a "must win" point in the season as of yet. Early wins and an above record always helps to avoid that situation. Back on the road for seven days, the Bees first stop would be in Cedar Rapids to play four games, before heading to Kane County for the weekend. The Bees are set to make a run at first place after grabbing three-of-four wins in the series, scoring a total of 31 runs and only giving up 15, the Bees finish their trip to Cedar Rapids with a 10-5 win over the Kernels.
Within the ten runs scored, were a few hidden gems for this Bees offense. David Sanchez, Julio Garcia, Franklin Torres, and Leonardo Rivas all hit their first home runs of the season. All four players happen to be working the infield defensively showcasing their teamwork on offense and defense. The Bees would go 14-for-38 at the plate leaving nine players on base but continue to show up offensively. Sprinkle in a double by David Mackinnon, a triple by Franklin Torres, and several 2-out RBI, the Bees offense should be able to compete with any team in the Midwest League with that stat line.
Follow My Lead
In the top of the first inning the Bees would score six runs on five hits. Jeyson Sanchez's two run homer to left field, would start the home run derby for the hot Bees offense. Simon Matthews would give up two runs in the bottom of the inning but that's as close as Cedar Rapids would get to tying the game. The infield crew would get back to work in the bottom of the third inning when Julio Garcia, Franklin Torres, and Leonardo Rivas all hit their first home runs of the season. All three players would send their respective shots over the right field wall against relief pitcher Nick Brown .
Simon Matthews took the mound to start the game but only pitched four innings to fall short of a chance to get the win. However, he would strikeout eight Cedar Rapids hitters and give up only four hits along with two runs. Sean Isaac got the call from the bullpen to relieve Simon Matthews in the fifth inning. Isaac struck out Jordan Gore with the bases loaded and saved a few earned runs for his teammate Simon Matthew.
In the fourth inning Cedar Rapid tempers began flare as third baseman Andrew Bechtold was ejected after arguing with the home plate umpire. The umpire ruled that Bechtold hadn't been hit by the tipped ball on his way out of the batters-box, making it a fair ball and a much easier play to get him out. After he was ejected, so was his manager Toby Gardenhire.
With these three wins, Burlington now sits in third place and only 2.5 games out of first place. Offensively, the Bees move into second in the league with 102 runs scored and got bumped down to second in the walk category with 100 base-on-balls. The Lansing Lugnuts lead both those categories but the Bees won't see them until mid-July at Community Field.
