Grand Chute, WI - The Peoria Chiefs never recovered from allowing five runs in the bottom of the first inning in a 15-5 loss to the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers Friday night. The loss drops the Chiefs to 9-10 overall and 1-4 on the road trip with two games left in Wisconsin.
A night after scoring five runs in the top of the first inning, the Chiefs were on the other end Friday. Joangtel Segovia led off the bottom of the first with a triple and Chiefs starter Alvaro Seijas walked the next three batters as Wisconsin took a 1-0 lead. Gilbert Lara singled home two and KJ Harrison's double made it 4-0. Seijas finally got an out with a strikeout before Payton Henry made it 5-0 on a grounder to shortstop. Seijas retired the nine hitter Nick Roscetti on a grounder to end the frame with a runner left at third.
Wisconsin added another run in the second as Tristan Lutz hit a solo home run to center field with one out. Demi Orimoloye walked with two outs and advanced to third on a double by Gilbert Lara before the Chiefs changed pitchers. Kodi Whitley came on and got a flyout to end the inning.
Peoria got on the board in the fourth against Bowden Francis. With one down Yariel Gonzalez was hit in the ankle by a pitch and Juan Yepez singled to center. Julio Rodriguez got the Chiefs on the board with a RBI single to left and Jonatan Machado cut the Rattlers lead to 6-2 with a RBI fielders' choice. Irving Lopez beat out an infield single to put two on base with two down but Edwin Figuera flew out to deep right to end the inning.
Wisconsin got those runs back in the fifth against Whitley. Lara led off with a single and moved to second on a single by Harrison. Hariston walked to load the bases and a sacrifice fly from Henry put Wisconsin up 7-2. Nick Roscetti's infield single scored Harrison for an 8-2 lead before the Chiefs turned a double play to end the inning.
The Chiefs bounced back in the sixth against reliever Carlos Herrera. Yepez singled with one out and moved to second on an errant throw back to the infield. Rodriguez launched a two-run homer past the video board in left-center for his third homer in 24 hours to cut the Wisconsin lead to 8-4.
Wisconsin blew the game open in the bottom of the inning against lefty Fabian Blanco. Lutz and McInerney both doubled for a 9-4 lead. With one out and two on Harrison doubled home a run and Hariston singled home two more. Roscetti made it 13-4 with a double to right and he was thrown out at third to end the inning. Wisconsin added two more in the seventh against Kevin Hamann for a 15-4 lead.
The Chiefs tallied the final run in the eighth against Jose Cuas. Gonzalez tripled past a sliding Segovia in left and Yepez delivered his third hit of the game to cut the score to 15-5.
