Great Lakes Loons News Release
MIDLAND, MI - The Great Lakes Loons were unable to get the big hit when it counted as they fell to the Swing of the Quad Cities in front of 5,742 fans by a score of 4-3.
After an RBI-double and run-scoring single from Adolfo Gonzalez and Matt Berezay gave the Loons a 2-0 lead. Swing shortstop Christian Lopez got Quad Cities on the board in the second by connecting for his third home run of the season off of Kershaw highlighting a four-run second inning and giving the Quad Cities a 4-2 advantage.
The RBI-double by Gonzalez in the second was hit right down the third-base line and was rule fair by home plate umpire Antonio Gutierrez, bringing Swing manager a very hot-tempered Keith Mitchell out of the dugout and was thrown out by Gutierrez for a tirade which last several minutes.
In the ninth inning, Loons designated hitter Josh Bell connected for a leadoff solo home run to bring the Loons within a run 4-3. The blast was the first homerun in stadium history to go all the way out of Dow Diamond to right field, the last Loons to hit a ball out to left field was catcher Juan Apodaca back in June.
Later in the inning, third baseman Carlos Santana drew a two-out walk to put the winning run at the plate for Apodaca. On a 3-1 fastball the catcher drilled a ball out into the right-center field gap but the Swing outfield (who were playing deep) was able to catch up to it and Antone Dejesus hauled it in for the final out of the ballgame.
The Loons bounced into three double plays to derail any thoughts of a comeback in the fourth, fifth, and seventh.
Clayton Kershaw started for the Loons and pitched six innings allowing all four Swing runs in picking up his fourth loss of the season. The highly touted left-hander has not picked up a victory since June 13. vs. Lansing. The righty was relieved by southpaw Miguel Sanfler and right-hander Miguel Ramirez who pitched three innings of scoreless ball.
Clayton Mortensen started for the Swing and pitched four innings thanks to a pitch count in giving up two runs while striking out six. Kyle Sadlowski (2-3) came on in relief and picked up his second win of the season going two innings while striking out three. Kenny Maiques came on in the ninth and allowed the home run to Bell, but picked up his save number 22 on the season.
The Swing-Loons series continues Thursday night when right-hander Josh Wall will get the start for Great Lakes against right-hander Shawn Garceau. Game time is 7:05pm. The Loons will celebrate Motown Night as the Fabulous Blues Brothers Act will perform. Brad Golder will call the action from Midland as the game will be carried in Mid-Michigan on the flagship home of Loons Baseball, Thunder Country 100.9 WYLZ.
