Four-Run Inning Enough for Whitecaps

COMSTOCK PARK - Four runs scored on six hits during the Whitecaps half of the third inning and Lauren Gagnier pitched into the seventh inning as West Michigan defeated Kane County, 4-1.

Jordan Newton, Joe Tucker, Scott Sizemore and Brennan Boesch started the third inning with consecutive four consecutive singles for West Michigan. Sizemore and Boesch each drove in a run. Ryan Strieby added an RBI single on a play that resulted in two runs, thanks to a throwing error by pitcher Scott Deal.

The only Kane County run of the game scored in the fifth inning when the Cougars loaded the bases with no outs thanks to a single, double and walk. Matt Smith crossed the plate when Sammy Hernandez grounded into a double play.

Gagnier pitched 6.1 innings, allowed one run on four hits with three walks and four strikeouts to earn the win. It was Gagnier's first win since June 27 against Lansing.

Luis Marte and Brett Jensen each pitched in relief for the Whitecaps. Jensen earned his 18th save of the season, which is the third highest total in the Midwest League.

With the win, West Michigan has assured itself a season series victory over Kane County for the first time since 2003 when the ‘Caps won five of eight meetings with the Cougars.

The Last of Thirteen: West Michigan's longest home stand in team history will conclude Friday with the last in the four game series against Kane County. RHP Matt O'Brien (3-1, 3.03) will be on the mound for the Whitecaps against Cougars RHP Henry Rodriguez (3-5, 2.73).
