COMSTOCK PARK - Four runs scored on six hits during the Whitecaps half of the third inning and Lauren Gagnier pitched into the seventh inning as West Michigan defeated Kane County, 4-1.
Jordan Newton, Joe Tucker, Scott Sizemore and Brennan Boesch started the third inning with consecutive four consecutive singles for West Michigan. Sizemore and Boesch each drove in a run. Ryan Strieby added an RBI single on a play that resulted in two runs, thanks to a throwing error by pitcher Scott Deal.
The only Kane County run of the game scored in the fifth inning when the Cougars loaded the bases with no outs thanks to a single, double and walk. Matt Smith crossed the plate when Sammy Hernandez grounded into a double play.
Gagnier pitched 6.1 innings, allowed one run on four hits with three walks and four strikeouts to earn the win. It was Gagnier's first win since June 27 against Lansing.
