
Kernels rally falls short in 5-4 loss to Dayton

The Cedar Rapids Kernels came up just short in a 5-4 loss to the Dayton Dragons in front of 8,729 fans at Fifth Third Field in Dayton on Wednesday night. The Kernels trailed 5-2 after five innings but cut that lead down to 5-4 and had they tying run on base when the game ended.
Brian Walker was 3 for 5 with a double as the Kernels out hit Dayton 12-6. P. J. Phillips, Abel Nieves and Julio Perez each had two hits and Phillips, Perez and Stantrel Smith each had an RBI.
Kernels starter David Herndon allowed five runs (three earned) on six hits over five innings of work to take the loss. Bobby Cassevah struck out two over three scoreless innings to help keep the Kernels in the game.
Dayton starter Daniel Guerrero (2-2) gave up three runs on ten hits over 5.1 innings to get the win. Ramon Geronimo allowed a hit and struck out two over the final 1.1 innings to earn his eighth save.
The loss drops the Kernels to 12-13 in the second half and 50-44 overall. Dayton improves to 13-12 and 57-38 overall.
The Kernels and Dragons square off for game three of this four game series on Thursday night at 6 pm as Trevor Bell is scheduled to start for the Kernels. The game can be heard on the internet at www.kernels.com
