Dayton Dragons News Release
Dayton, OH - For the second series in a row, the Dragons have won the first three games against a visiting opponent. After taking the first three against the Clinton LumberKings to begin the home stand, Dayton has now taken the first three games against the Cedar Rapids Kernels with a 5-3 win before 8,898 fans at Fifth Third Field.
Cedar Rapids scored the first run of the game in the top of the first inning against Dragons starter Jordan Smith (WP, 8-6). Wilberto Ortiz drew a walk to start the ballgame and stole second base. After a wild pitch moved him up to third, Ortiz scored on a single to left by Abel Nieves for the early 1-0 advantage.
Dayton immediately answered with two runs on three hits in the bottom of the first against Trevor Bell (LP, 4-3). Drew Stubbs began the inning with a double and scored on a single from Justin Turner. After a couple of ground outs moved Turner over to third, Chris Heisey picked up a two-out RBI single to put the Dragons on top 2-1.
The teams traded runs through the middle innings as the Dragons picked up tallies in the fourth and fifth with the Kernels scoring runs in the fifth and sixth innings. Dayton picked up an unearned run off Bell in the fourth on a Mark Sweeney error and in the fifth on Logan Parker's single to center. The Kernels got their run in the fifth with a RBI single from Stantrel Smith, and added a RBI single from Brian Walker in the sixth off of Dan Donaldson (ND) to cut into the Dragons lead at 4-3.
Dayton got a big insurance run in the eighth inning to extend the lead to 5-3. Turner picked up a two-out triple, and Juan Francisco drove him in with a single to center for the two run cushion. Ramon Geronimo (SV, 9) got the final three outs for his second save in as many nights after Lee Tabor (ND) pitched a scoreless seventh and eighth inning.
The Dragons and Kernels wrap up the four game series Friday night at Fifth Third Field with a 7:00 PM first pitch. Dayton will send LHP Alexander Smit (0-0, 0.00 ERA) to the mound, while Cedar Rapids counters with LHP Blake Holler (1-3, 3.83 ERA). 1410 ESPN Radio WING AM will carry the game live beginning with the Dragons Pre Game Show at 6:30 PM.
