GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. - Todd Johnson went 3-for-3 and Scott Deal pitched seven innings, but the Kane County Cougars lost, 4-1, Thursday night in Game 3 of a four-game series against the West Michigan Whitecaps at Fifth Third Ballpark.

The Cougars' problems occurred in the third inning, as the Whitecaps scored all of their runs against Deal (4-8) and sent eight men to the plate. The 20-year-old settled down to get through seven frames, scattering 11 hits, walking one and fanning five while remaining winless in his last four outings. John Herrera pitched a perfect eighth in relief.

The Cougars' offense had and wasted scoring chances all night, starting in the first when Mike Massaro led off the game with a double but was stranded. Their lone run arrived in the fifth off Lauren Gagnier (4-9), as they loaded the bases with no outs before a double play brought home Matt Smith. Then the Cougars stranded two in the seventh, two in the eighth against Luis Marte and one in the ninth versus closer Brett Jensen, who notched his 18th save.

The Cougars (9-16) and Whitecaps (18-8) conclude their four-game series Friday night at 6 CDT when Henry Rodriguez (3-5) faces Matt O'Brien (3-1).
