
Kernels drop third in a row to Dayton, 5-3

July 19, 2007 - Four Kernel errors led to two unearned runs as the Cedar Rapids Kernels lost their third game in a row to the Dayton Dragons, 5-3, in front of 8,898 fans at Fifth Third Field in Dayton on Thursday night.
The Kernels had 11 hits on the night including doubles by Mark Trumbo, Matt Sweeney, Stantrel Smith and two by Julio Perez. Smith, Brian Walker and Josh Davies each had an RBI.
Kernels starter Trevor Bell (4-3) allowed four runs (two earned) on eight hits and struck out three in 5.1 innings of work to take the loss. Barret Browning allowed three hits and a run over the final 2.2 innings in relief of Bell.
Dayton starter Jordan Smith (8-6) held the Kernels to two runs on five hits and struck out five over five innings to get the win. Ramon Geronimo allowed a hit in the top of the ninth to earn his ninth save and his second save in this series.
The Kernels hit into three double plays and stranded seven men on base. The loss drops the Kernels to 12-14 in the second half of the MWL season and 50-45 overall as Dayton improves to 14-12 and 58-38.
The final game of this four game series is Friday night at 6 pm as the Kernels send lefty Blake Holler to the mound. The game can be heard on the internet at www.kernels.com
