Great Lakes Loons News Release
DAYTON, OH - Josmar Cordero homered twice and the Loons took advantage of an errant throw in the 11th inning for a 3-2 victory over the Dayton Dragons Tuesday night.
With the game tied 2-2, Joey Curletta walked to begin the top of the 11th against reliever Evan Mitchell. Cordero followed with his third hit of the game, a bloop single to right. Then with one out, Webster Rivas grounded to first. Sammy Diaz fielded the ball cleanly and threw to second for a force out, but shortstop Carlton Daal's throw to Mitchell (1-3) covering first went past the pitcher for a throwing error and allowed Curletta to score the go-ahead run.
Jacob Rhame protected the lead with a 1-2-3 11th, although Phil Ervin lifted a drive deep to left field that was caught by Jacob Scavuzzo with his back against the wall for the first out of the inning.
Curletta scored the go-ahead run in the 11th and turned in the biggest play of the game defensively in the ninth inning to force extra innings. With the score tied at two, two outs and runners at first and second, Daal singled to right just in front of Curletta, who fired to the plate and gunned down Sebastian Elizalde trying to score from second with the winning run.
The Loons bullpen of Michael Johnson (1/3 inning), Victor Araujo (1 2/3), Mark Pope (two) and Rhame (one) combined for five scoreless relief innings. Pope (1-0) won his first decision of the year and Rhame notched his second save. Loons starter Scott Barlow allowed just two earned runs over six innings in his third start of the year.
Cordero blasted solo home runs in the fourth and seventh innings for his first two longballs of the season, accounting for the Loons only scoring offense in regulation. He had half of the Loons' six hits in the game.
Elizalde recorded a two-run single in the fourth for Dayton's two runs in the first nine innings.
The Loons have now won just two of the eight meetings this season between the two teams.
The Loons (21-24) and Dragons (25-18) meet for the finale of a three-game series Wednesday night at 7pm. Right-hander Greg Harris (3-4, 6.82) squares off against Nick Travieso (5-1, 1.58). The game will be broadcast live on ESPN 100.9-FM and ESPN1009.com. The Loons return to Dow Diamond Thursday to face South Bend at 7:05pm on a Chemical Bank Dollar Family Feast Night. Tickets available at Loons.com or 989-837-BALL.
The Great Lakes Loons are an eighth-year Single-A partner of the Los Angeles Dodgers. For tickets and more information about the Loons, visit Loons.com, or call 989-837-BALL.
