Kane County Cougars News Release

APPLETON, Wis. - The Cougars (30-16) became the first team in the Midwest League to record 30 wins in the 2014 season as they picked up an 8-2 victory in the rubber game against the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers (21-24) at Fox Cities Stadium Wednesday evening.

The Cougars jumped out to a 3-0 lead through the first three innings. Yasiel Balaguert tripled home Ben Carhart in the first, Daniel Lockhart plated Jacob Rogers with a double in the second and Carhart punched in Jake Hannemann in the third.

The lead stayed 3-0 until the sixth inning when the Cougars loaded the bases with nobody out against Wisconsin starter Tristan Archer. Will Remillard connected on a two-run single to extend the Cougars' lead 5-0. After a pitching change, Lockhart flied out to center to bring home Balaguert for a 6-0 Cougars advantage.

Wisconsin's bullpen kept the Cougars quiet for the next couple innings and the Timber Rattlers picked up a run in the seventh and eighth innings.

Lockhart continued his productive bat in the ninth inning as he led off the frame with a double. Hannemann brought home Lockhart and Penalver returned the favor with an RBI single putting the Cougars ahead 8-2.

Duane Underwood (1-1) worked five shutout innings to begin the ballgame allowing two hits, four walks and striking out five. Archer (2-2) suffered the loss being charged with six earned runs on nine hits through five frames.

The Cougars head home for a six-game home stand beginning with a three-game series against the Clinton LumberKings. Paul Blackburn (4-1, 2.76) will start for the Cougars against Clinton's left-hander Eddie Campbell (2-2, 5.05) on Thursday with the game beginning at 6:30 p.m. at Fifth Third Bank Ballpark.
