Lugs set season highs in 13-8 slugfest win

LANSING, Mich. - The Lansing Lugnuts (22-21) pounded 16 hits on their way to a 13-8 win over the Bowling Green Hot Rods (20-25) to close a seven-game home stand on Wednesday afternoon at Cooley Law School Stadium.

The Lugnuts took the rubber match of the three-game series and set a new season high in runs scored and hits. Lansing also worked a season-best 10 walks, but stranded 14 runners on base, going 9-for-23 with runners in scoring position.

Cooley Law School Stadium saw its largest crowd of the season, with 8,928 fans in attendance on the afternoon.

First baseman L.B. Dantzler led the offensive charge for the Lugnuts, going 2-for-3 with a two walks and three RBIs. Left fielder Dickie Joe Thon went 3-for-4 with an RBI and scored two runs.

Trailing 7-6 entering the fifth inning, Lansing jumped ahead with three consecutive RBI singles by Chaz Frank, Mitch Nay and Dantzler against reliever Andrew Hanse (Loss, 0-3).

The Lugnuts added insurance in the sixth with an RBI single by Seth Conner, and plated two more runs on a Thon double in the eighth.

Reliever Phil Kish (Win, 3-2) worked 3.1 innings without allowing a run to hold the Lugnuts ahead in the middle frames.

Bowling Green took a 1-0 lead in the first inning when left fielder Granden Goetzman brought in Ariel Soriano with a single off of Alonzo Gonzalez, who was making his first start of the season for Lansing.

The Lugnuts answered with a six-run bottom of the first inning with the bulk of the damage coming on a bases-clearing, three-run double by shortstop Jason Leblebijian. Bowling Green starter German Marquez was chased from the game after recording only two outs, allowing six runs on five hits and two walks.

Lansing reliever Yeyfry Del Rosario pitched 2.1 innings, allowing three unearned runs on one hit and totaled five strikeouts.

The Lugnuts begin a six-day road trip on Thursday, heading to Fort Wayne, Ind. to open a three-game series with the TinCaps. Right-hander Alberto Tirado (1-0, 3.03) will start on the mound for Lansing, with righty Adrian De Horta (0-1, 4.45) pitching for Fort Wayne. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 p.m.
