Dayton Dragons News Release

Dayton, Ohio-Great Lakes relievers Brandon Martinez and Victor Arano combined for five scoreless innings and the Loons scored six runs over the final four frames as they came from behind to defeat the Dayton Dragons 7-2 on Wednesday night at Fifth Third Field. The Dragons are now tied for second place, one and one-half games behind first place South Bend.

The Dragons picked up the lead in the bottom of the third inning when Jamodrick McGruder walked, went to second on an infield single by Sammy Diaz, and scored on Phillip Ervin's single to left to make it 1-0.

Great Lakes tied the game in the top of the fourth. Jacob Scavuzzo hit a high fly ball to short left field that Ervin momentarily lost in the twilight sky. Ervin located the ball and raced in, making a diving effort, but he could not make the catch and Scavuzzo went to second with a double. Paul Hoenecke's deep fly out to center advanced Scavuzzo to third, and Joey Curletta's ground out to shortstop brought in Scavuzzo to tie the game.

The game did not stay tied for long. In the bottom of the fourth, Dayton's Sebastian Elizalde hit the second pitch from Great Lakes starter Greg Harris over the right field fence for his seventh home run of the season to give the Dragons a 2-1 lead.

But the rest of the night belonged to the Loons. They tied the game in the sixth on Scuvuzzo's run-scoring single, and then took the lead in the seventh on a two-run single by Malcolm Holland to make it 4-2. The Loons added another run in the eighth and two more in the ninth to close out the scoring.

Dragons starting pitcher Nick Travieso worked the first five innings and left the game with the lead, allowing one hit and one run with no walks and three strikeouts. Reliever Tony Amezcua (0-2) replaced Travieso and suffered the loss, allowing three runs over one inning, walking four. Joel Bender tossed the final three innings, allowing six hits and three runs.

The Dragons finished with eight hits. Ervin and Avain Rachal each went 2 for 4. Elizalde's home run was his fourth in his last eight games.

The Dragons open a new three-game series at Fifth Third Field on Thursday against the West Michigan Whitecaps at 7:00 p.m. The Dragons and Whitecaps are currently tied for the East Division wildcard slot with 24 games to play in the first half race. Daniel Wright (2-2, 2.15) will start for the Dragons against West Michigan's Chad Green (0-1, 3.54).

The game will be televised on WHIO Digital Channel 7.2 (Time Warner Cables channels 23 and 372). All Dragons games can be heard on WONE Radio (980 AM) and via the internet at wone.com and through the Dragons Mobile App.

Notes: The game featured a rain delay of 33 minutes prior to the start of the fourth inning.
