Lookouts' Winning Streak Ends at 11 Games with 5-4 Loss to Suns

The Chattanooga Lookouts (25-26) came close to winning their 12th game in a row, but surrendered two runs in the ninth inning to fall to the Jacksonville Suns (31-22), 5-4.
The game began with two quick innings to start things off, before Jacksonville broke up the scoreless tie. Shortstop Austin Nola took first after he was hit by a pitch and scored later in the inning on a Viosergy Rosa RBI double. The Suns ended that frame with only one run, but increased their lead to two in the fifth inning on another RBI hit by Rosa off of Matt Shelton. Despite giving up two runs, Shelton delivered another solid performance by a Lookouts' starter, striking out five batters in his five innings of work.
Trailing for the first time since August 6th against the Montgomery Biscuits (Down 2-1 in the 7thinning), the Lookouts' bats clicked into gear in the bottom of the fifth. Starting catcher J.C. Boscan began the inning with a bunt single to first base. Pinch-hitter Angel Sanchez then singled through the hole at shortstop to put two runners on. Two quick outs brought Scott Schebler to the plate who was hit by a pitch, for the 19th time this season, to bring up the white hot Daniel Mayora. The infielder continued to pound the baseball, slugging a bases-clearing double. Mayora finished the night going 1-for-3 and is now hitting .442 (19-for-43) in the month of August.
One night after leaving 17 runners on base, the Jacksonville Suns finally capitalized on their opportunities. For the third time on the night, Rosa gathered a clutch hit, this time collecting a triple. The first-baseman was then plated on a sacrifice-fly by Joe Benson.
With extra-innings looming, Chattanooga took to the field in the eighth inning and strung together a run on a fielding error, a single by Dickson and a sacrifice fly by Chris O'Brien.
Up by one the Lookouts sent in Juan Gonzalez to close the game and extend their winning streak, but the right-hander got off to a shaky start and ended up loading the bases. A single by Benson brought home the tying run and the winning run on a close play at the plate.
The loss sends the Lookouts back under .500 and one game back of the Tennessee Smokies for first place in the division. Tomorrow Chattanooga will aim to begin another winning streak when RHP Steve Smith (1-0, 3.50) takes the bump against lefty Justin Nicolino (11-3, 2.72) on a Fireworks Friday and Arts Night at AT&T Field.
