BARONS END GENERALS THREE GAME WIN STREAK THURSDAY

August 14, 2014 - Southern League (SL1)
Jackson Generals News Release

JACKSON, TENN. - Jackson's (25-28, 56-66) three-game winning streak came to an end after a 6-5 loss to the Birmingham Barons (24-29/53-70) on Thursday in Jackson. Jackson held a 5-2 lead after three innings, but Birmingham used two homers from Trayce Thompson and one from Rangel Ravelo to earn just their second win in their last 12 games.

It was another one-run loss for the Generals, their 22nd as they fall to 9-22 in those matchups. The loss also drops Jackson two games behind the Tennessee Smokies in the Southern League North Division race.

Birmingham began the scoring in the first inning as Trayce Thompson led off the game with his 14th home run of the season on a 0-2 pitch from starter Stephen Landazuri. Dan Black later scored on a sacrifice fly from Jason Coats and the Barons had an early 2-0 lead.

Jackson pushed across their first run in the second when Jordy Lara (1x2, 2 R, BB) scored on a Dario Pizzano (1x4, R, 3 RBI, BB) groundout the cut the lead to 2-1.

One inning later the Generals offense came alive. With two outs Pat Kivlehan (1x5, R, RBI) doubled home Tyler Smith (1x2, R, 3 BB) to tie the game at 2-2, then two batters later Dario Pizzano (1x4, R, 3 RBI) doubled to score Kivlehan and Lara. After Dan Paolini (1x3, BB) walked, Pizzano crossed the plate on a base hit from Steve Baron (3x4, RBI) and the lead was 5-2 after three innings.

In the fourth inning, Thompson hit his second home run of the game and 15th of the year, another solo shot, and Jackson's lead was cut to 5-3.

Birmingham added another long ball in the fifth inning, a two-run homer from Ravelo that also scored Black and the Barons had come all the way back, tying the game 5-5.

The Barons took their second and final lead of the game in the eighth inning when Michael Earley singled to center and Joey DeMichele scored to make it 6-5 Birmingham.

Jackson had an opportunity in the ninth, as the first two batters in the inning reached base. It was followed by back-to-back fly outs followed by a strikeout from Pizzano ended the game as the Barons took the 6-5 win.

It turned into a bullpen affair as neither starter was able to pitch through the sixth inning.

Jackson starter Stephen Landazuri (6-4, 3.83) went 4.0 innings and allowed five runs on seven hits, but earned a no decision as Moises Hernandez (0-7, 5.57) took the loss for Jackson. He allowed one run in 2.2 innings of relief, on only two hits. Kevin Vance (6-3, 4.97) picked up the win for Birmingham as he struck out three in 2.0 scoreless innings and Parker Frazier earned his first save of the season with a scoreless ninth.

The Generals will look to get back on the winning track Friday against the Barons. Jackson will send Victor Sanchez (6-4, 3.93) to the mound as Chris Bassitt (1-0, 1.06) will make the start for Birmingham. Friday is Free Cash Friday and Flat Screen Friday. The game will begin at 7:05 p.m. and can be heard on TuneIn Radio and jacksongeneralsbaseball.com.
