Lights Out: BayBears Rally Suspended in Ninth

PENSACOLA, FL - The Bay-to-Bay series had another chapter added to its short but rather rich history Wednesday night. With the Mobile BayBears reclaiming a 4-3 lead with one out in the top of the ninth inning, Pensacola Bayfront Stadium went dark, as is lights-out dark. Due to a light malfunction, the game has been suspended in the top of the ninth inning and is scheduled to resume Thursday evening.
Players, staff and fans sat in complete darkness for nearly 15 minutes in the top of the ninth inning, in the midst of a Mobile rally. The BayBears had the bases loaded with one out after scoring two runs to reclaim the lead and pulling ahead 4-3.
Then as Evan Marzilli was getting ready to stand in the batter's box for the BayBears, the lights along first base side went dark. Then all of the field lights went off. After a delay, the lights were turned back on but the lights along first base side failed to return to full power.
As a result, the umpires suspended the game until 5:30 PM Thursday. The regularly scheduled game will start 30 minutes after the suspended game ends.
Until the eighth inning, the game was dominated by pitching. The only two runs scored in the first seven innings of the game came in the very beginning of the contest when Brandon Drury put the BayBears up 2-0 with a two-run homer in the top of the first.
The two run-shot would be the only runs allowed by RHP Jon Moscot. The Blue Wahoos' righty allowed the two runs on seven hits and struck out six in six full innings on the mound before turning the ball over to the bullpen with Mobile still leading 2-0 entering the seventh.
BayBears' RHP Aaron Blair was spectacular, tossing six innings of shutout baseball and only allowing one hit while striking out three batters. Wednesday was Blair's fifth Double-A start and second against Pensacola. In two starts against the Blue Wahoos this season Blair has not allowed a single run in 12 full innings.
In the bottom half of the eighth inning, the Blue Wahoos bats came to life against Mobile RHP Jimmie Sherfy. Pensacola came back with three runs on five hits in the eighth inning to take the lead, 3-2. Sherfy allowed one run to score with runners at first and second, then RHP Kaleb Fleck was brought into the game to face Travis Mattair when the Blue Wahoos first baseman placed a single through right field that scored Ryan Wright and Kyle Waldrop.
BayBears manager Andy Green was ejected in the bottom of the eighth inning when an appeal to third base was upheld. The BayBears responded in the top of the ninth inning when Gerson Montilla singled and advanced to third on a Jon Griffin ground-rule double. With runners and second and third and still no outs, Argenis Diaz singled to left, tying the game at 3-3. Mark Thomas pushed the BayBears ahead in the next at-bat, scoring Griffin from third on a RBI single to left. After Todd Glaesmann grounded out, the Blue Wahoos elected to intentionally walk Tom Belza to load the bases with one out when the lights malfunctioned and resulted in the game's suspension.
The BayBears will wrap up their five game series with the Blue Wahoos on Saturday night.
Mobile then returns to Hank Aaron Stadium to for a 10-game homestand from August 17-26.
