Birmingham, Ala. - The Birmingham Barons snapped a season-worst seven game road-losing streak Thursday with a 6-5 win over the Jackson Generals in front of 2,200 fans at Generals Park.
Trayce Thompson started the game with a bang, launching a leadoff home run againstJackson starter Stephen Landazuri as a part of a two-run first inning for the Barons.
Five unanswered runs by the Generals including four in the third inning against starter Bryan Blough put the Barons in a 5-2 hole. The inning was highlighted by RBI doubles from Patrick Kivlehan and Dario Pizzano.
Thompsonstruck again in the fifth, cutting the Generals lead to 5-3 with his secondsolo home run against Landazuri and his team-leading 15th homer of the season. Rangel Ravelo followed an inning later with a two-run shot tying the game at 5-5 and chasing Landazuri from the game.
The game would remain tied into the eighth where a leadoff walk to Joey DeMichele set the stage for the winning rally. A sacrifice bunt by Jeremy Farrell moved DeMichele to second base and Michael Earley followed with an RBI single as the Barons reclaimed the lead at 6-5.
A beleaguered Barons bullpen came through with 3.1 scoreless IP in relief of Blough as Nelvin Fuentes, Kevin Vance (6-3, 4.97) and Parker Frazier (S, 1)allowed just two hits and struck out five, securing the win for the Barons.
Kevan Smith led the Barons offense with three hits on the night, finishing 3-for-4 as the Barons improved to 53-70 on the season and 24-29 in the second half while Jackson fell to 56-66 on the year and 25-28 in the second half.
The Barons will look to win their second in a row tomorrow night as RHP Chris Bassitt (1-0, 1.06) takes the hill against RHP Victor Sanchez (6-4, 3.93). First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 PM CDT.
