Chattanooga Lookouts News Release
The Chattanooga Lookouts (6-6) and the Birmingham Barons (5-6) split today's doubleheader at AT&T Field with the Barons taking the first game, 12-10, and the Lookouts coming away with the 5-3 win in game two.
The first game of today's doubleheader was a continuation of last night's game which was suspended in the third inning with Birmingham leading 3-2. Today, the Barons built on last night's lead with a solo home run by Jared Mitchell in the fifth inning. Down two runs in the sixth the Lookouts' offense exploded for four runs on a sacrifice fly by O'Koyea Dickson and a three-run home run by Darnell Sweeney. With two more runs in the bottom of the seventh the Lookouts were on pace for their sixth win of the season, but the Barons had other ideas.
A three-run eighth inning by the visiting club brought the team within one run and a five-run ninth inning sealed their victory. Sweeney hit his second home run of the game in the eighth and outfielder Bobby Coyle smacked his first of the year in the ninth, but they weren't enough to thwart their opponents comeback.
The second game of the doubleheader started off on a much better note for the Lookouts. For the third time in three straight at-bats, Sweeney hit a home run and gave the Lookouts' the early one-run lead. The red-hot infielder finished the doubleheader with five hits, three home runs, two doubles and five RBIs over the two games.
Up 1-0, the Lookouts surrendered an unearned run that tied the game at one. Chattanooga broke the tie in the bottom of the fourth inning when Daniel Mayora hit a two-run home run. The home run was his fifth of the year and he now has a team-high 36 hits in the month of June.
Heading into the fifth inning, starting pitcher Matt Shelton had yet to give up a hit. After retiring the first batter of the inning, the righty gave up his first hit of the night when Dan Wagner smacked a double. Wagner ended up scoring one of two Barons' runs that inning to tie the game back up at three.
Noel Cuevas answered the Barons' offensive strike an inning later when he led-off the sixth inning with a double. Scott Schebler proceeded to move him to third on a single and Mayora hit a single of his own to plate Cuevas. After a pitching change, the bases became loaded and Schebler came home on a fielding error by Wagner.
Right-hander Robert Carson came on for Chattanooga in the top of the seventh and earned his first save of the season by recording a 1-2-3 inning.
Tomorrow, the two team's will be back at it when LHP Chris Reed (4-5, 2.91) takes the mound for Chattanooga against RHP Chris Beck (3-6, 3.43) at 7:15 p.m.
