THE LAST GAME- The Lookouts' win streak ends at five games, as they fall to the Smokies 7-5. The Lookouts out hit the Smokies, 12-9, but fell short in the end.

Rick Asadoorian got the first inning off to a good start with a lead off single, and then came around to score on an Aaron Herr RBI single. Tennessee came back in the top of the second with a three spot, highlighted by a solo home run by Jamie D'Antona. In the top of the fourth, the Smokies were able to capitalize on two wild pitches by Phil Dumatrait. They put three runs on the board on three hits, bringing the score to 6-1. In the bottom of the inning, Aaron Herr kept his hot hitting going with a single and then came around to score on a Miguel Perez double. The Lookouts continued to claw their way back as they scored another run in the bottom of the seventh. Noochie Varner led the inning off with a double and then was advanced to third on two consecutive walks. Varner then scored on a sacrifice fly by Rick Asadoorian. Tennessee put another run on the board in the top of the ninth to bring the score to 7-3. In the bottom of the ninth, Noochie Varner led off with a single and moved to second on a single by Luis Bolivar. Rick Asadoorian then singled up the middle, scoring Varner from second. Joey Votto came through with an RBI single, scoring Bolivar from second. Unfortunately for Lookouts' fans, the rally ended on an Aaron Herr fly-out.

Lookouts starter Phil Dumatrait (2-2) suffered the loss after tossing four innings, allowing six runs, five earned, on six hits. Clint Goocher got the win for the Smokies, bringing his record to 3-1.

PROBABLE STARTER: RHP Travis Chick will make his fifth start of the season and first since being activated from the disabled list. In his four starts, Chick is 1-0 with a 3.26 ERA. In 19.1 innings pitched, he has allowed seven earned runs on 18 hits, while walking only six versus 15 strikeouts. The Smokies will send RHP Ross Ohlendorf to the mound for his sixth start of the season. He is 0-2 with a 2.61 ERA in 31.0 innings. He has allowed 10 runs, nine earned, on 34 hits. He has walked seven and struck out 23.

1906 - The Pittsburgh Pirates became the first team to use an infield tarpaulin.

1931 - This is the birthday of Willie Mays. His statistics include 3,283 hits, 660 home runs, and a lifetime .302 batting average. He is tied for the appearance record in all-star games with 24. Mays, was elected to the Hall of Fame in 1979.

1968 - In the Midwest League, Cedar Rapids made seven . . . errors . . . in one inning . . . and 12 for the game. The Cardinals lost to the Wisconsin Rapids Twins, 21-4.

1981 - This must be the date for triples. Mike Gates, Tim Raines, and Tim Wallach hit triples back-to-back-to-back in the ninth for the Montreal Expos. The San Diego Padres won anyway, 13-5.

1998 - Kerry Wood, Chicago Cubs rookie pitcher, set a National League record and tied the major league record with 20 strikeouts in a nine-inning game. The record was set by Roger Clemens of the Red Sox . . . twice, in 1986 and again in 1996. The Cubs beat the Houston Astros, 2-0. The old National League record of 19 was shared by Steve Carlton, Tom Seaver, and David Cone.

2001 - Chipper Jones of Atlanta hit his 200th career home run. The Braves beat the St. Louis Cardinals, 7-5.

2003 - Dmitri Young of Detroit became the first player in 45 years to hit two home runs . . . and two triples . . . in one game. The Tigers beat the Baltimore Orioles, 7-6. Willie Mays was the most recent to record the feat. Mays did it in May, 1958. Lou Gehrig and Lew Fonseca both had a banner day in the late 1920s.
