Longfellow shines in Lake Erie win

AVON, Ohio - The Lake Erie Crushers assured themselves of their first series victory at home this season with an 8-2 victory over the Washington Wild Things at All Pro Freight Stadium on Tuesday night.

The Crushers (9-14) have strung together back-to-back victories at home for the first time all season, while the Wild Things(9-12) have now lost four out of their last five games.

The Crushers got eight incredible innings from Trevor Longfellow (2-0), who held the Wild Things to just a pair of hits in his fourth start of the season.

Lake Erie scored multiple runs in three innings, and plated a trio of runs in the third to snap a scoreless tie. Brandon Decker delivered his first of two RBI singles to plate the first run of the contest, before Rogelio Noris came home on a wild pitch. Wally Correa capped the big inning, as he brought Decker home on an RBI groundout.

The Crushers added two more in the fourth inning. Decker belted a single to right field, plating Russ Moldenhauer in the process, and Decker came home later in the fourth, scoring from first base on third baseman Taylor Oldham's throwing error.

Adrian Ortiz smashed his first homerun of the season to kick start the bottom of the fifth inning, and the Crushers tacked on two more in the eighth. Walks were issued to Robby Kuzdale and Andrew Davis, before Kyle Weldon belted an RBI single. Noris brought in Lake Erie's final run, on a sacrifice fly to score Davis.

The Wild Things got their only two runs in the ninth. Robbie Garvey walked to start the inning, and came home on Oldham's single. Tim Leary's groundout plated Jeriel Waller for the final run of the contest.

Longfellow secured the victory, and struck out seven batters, giving him 14 in his last two starts. He has allowed just an earned run over 13.2 innings over his last two starts. Eric Blackwell (1-2) was tagged for six runs, five earned on six hits over five innings and took the loss.

Six players scored for the Crushers on the night. Decker paced the Crushers with his 2-for-4 performance. The Alpine, Calif., native, had a pair of hits, scored twice and drove in two on the evening. The Crushers have scored 18 runs over their last two games, after failing to score more than seven in a game in any of their previous 12 home games.

The Crushers will finish their three game series against the Washington Wild Things at All Pro Freight Stadium on Wednesday night. Left hander Paul Fagan (1-3, 2.91) will start for the Crushers, and the Wild Things will counter with right hander Chris Smith (1-2, 2.32). The first pitch is scheduled for 7:05 PM.
