Miners Lose Close One to Beach Bums

Marion, IL - The Southern Illinois Miners were defeated by the Traverse City Beach Bums 6-4. The Miners lose their first home series of the 2012 season. Miners starter Darrin Tew pitched well as he threw 5.2 innings, gave up two hits, allowed one run, walked three and struck out five.

The Miners scored first in the bottom of the fifth inning off Beach Bums starter Jacob Clem as outfielder Taye Larry brought Carlos Mendez in with a base hit to give the Miners a 1-0 lead. The Beach Bums came right back in the top of the sixth as center fielder Kyle Colligan hit a sacrifice fly off Darrin Tew to tie it at 1-1. With the game tied going into the bottom of the sixth, the Miners scored three runs. Matt Fields singled in Jake Kaase to give the Miners a 2-1 lead. Carlos Mendez brought Chad Maddox in with a groundout to second to extend the Miners lead 3-1. Will Block capped off the inning with a base hit and RBI to score Matt Fields to make it 4-1 Miners.

Beach Bums third baseman Jose Vargas hit a solo home run in the top of the seventh off Miners reliever Ben Shivers to bring the Beach Bums within two runs. With the score 4-2 in favor of the Miners, Gabriel Shaw came on in relief top of the eighth inning. The Beach Bums scored four runs, three off Gabriel Shaw who didn't record an out and one run off Albert Ayala to take a 6-4 lead.

Max Peterson pitched a scoreless top of the ninth inning for the Miners. Beach Bums reliever Matt Miller threw 2.2 innings of one hit ball. He struck out two batters. Scott Dunn recorded the save in the bottom of the ninth to give the Beach Bums the win.

With the loss the Miners fall to 14-9 on the season. The Beach Bums move into first place in the East Division with a record of 15-8. The Miners and Beach Bums wrap up the three game series tomorrow night at Rent One Park. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 pm.
