NL Winnipeg Goldeyes

Long Purchased by Marlins

August 6, 2010 - Northern League (NL)
Winnipeg Goldeyes News Release

Winnipeg Goldeyes manager Rick Forney announced today that shortstop Wes Long's contract has been purchased by the Florida Marlins and he will join the Single-A Greensboro Grasshoppers.

Long, 28, leaves Winnipeg eighth in Northern League batting with a .323 average, which is second on the team. He has hit seven home runs and racked up 41 RBI in 69 games. Long has started 69 of Winnipeg's 70 games this season at shortstop and was selected to the Northern League's All-Star Team last month.

A product of Auburn, Ala., Long appeared in 110 games with Winnipeg over the past two years, hitting .330 with 10 home runs and 63 RBI.

Long was drafted in 2004 by the Oakland Athletics and played in their organization at the Rookie and Single-A levels from 2004-2006. He spent 2007 and 2008 with Windy City of the Frontier League.

This is the second time a member of the Goldeyes has been purchased by a Major League team this season. Pitcher Mark Holliman was picked up by the Boston Red Sox on June 28.

Long becomes the 18th player under manager Rick Forney over the last four years to be purchased by a Major League team.

The Goldeyes now have 21 players on their roster, including 11 pitchers and 10 position players.

Winnipeg opens a 10-game home stand tonight against Kansas City T-Bones, who are here for three games at Canwest Park this weekend. Great seats can be purchased by visiting any Ticketmaster location.
