Joliet JackHammers News Release
JOLIET, IL - The Joliet Jackhammers (36-33) came close to tying the game in a wild finish at Silver Cross Field Friday night, but couldn't come out on top as the Flyers (27-43) won 5-4.
Joliet went into the ninth down two runs and with two outs Rafael Mendez launched a solo shot off of Josh Giles to pull the Jackhammers to within one. After a Kevin Rios walk, Brian McCullough entered to pitch to Brad Correll, who tapped a weak grounder to first. Kit Pellow made an errant toss to first and Chad Parker sent Rios around third. But Tom Fitzgerald tossed a dart home and Dylan Parzyk applied the tag to end the game, securing the Flyers victory.
The Jackhammers started the scoring off with Jon Nelson's 21st home run of the year, a three run shot in the bottom of the first.
But in the fifth, Brandon Newton launched his second bomb of the season, a three run game-tying homer. Joey Gomes added another run for the Flyers in the sixth, lifting a sacrifice fly to center to score Pellow.
Schaumburg's final run of the evening came on a Bear Bay (5-5) balk that plated Parzyk to make the Flyers lead 5-3.
Flyers starter Alain Quijano (3-7) settled down after a rough first frame. The lefty gave up just three runs on five hits in six innings with three walks and six strikeouts. Bay took the loss, tossing seven innings with five runs allowed on seven hits.
McCullough earned his second save of the season in the win.
The Flyers continue their weekend set with the Joliet Jackhammers at Silver Cross Field Saturday night. Brett Harker will take the hill for Schaumburg opposite Joliet's Kyle Dahman.
