Southern Maryland Blue Crabs News Release

Waldorf, MD - The Road Warriors scored 10 runs off of 11 hits and six Blue Crabs walks en route to a 10-7 win over Southern Maryland on Saturday night in front of 4,190 fans at Regency Furniture Stadium. The game lasted three hours and twenty-four minutes.

The Blue Crabs started the scoring on a sac fly by shortstop Yunesky Sanchez in the first inning to give the Southern Maryland their lone lead of the night at 1-0.

The Road Warriors, however, would score the next four runs of the game to take control. In the second, the visitors tied the game on an RBI double by second baseman Amadeo Zazueta, before an RBI triple by right fielder Michael Mooney and an RBI single by first baseman Carolos Sosa in the third gave the Road Warriors a 3-1 lead. They added an unearned run in the fourth as a routine ground ball was booted by Sanchez, which allowed Zazueta to score from second.

The Blue Crabs got a run back in the bottom of the fourth on a resounding double off the leftfield wall by designated hitter Jorge Rodriguez to make it a 4-2 game.

But the Road Warriors would not be denied as they plated the next five runs to make the score 9-2. In the sixth, third baseman Daniel Jordan (3) blasted a solo homer to extend the lead to three, before four runs in the seventh gave the Road Warriors their biggest lead of the game at seven. A bases loaded walk by shortstop Danny Gonzalez scored the first run, while a two run single by catcher Josh Johnson put the score at 8-2. Zazueta followed that with an RBI fielder's choice to complete the scoring in the seventh.

Southern Maryland tried to make a game of it. Leftfielder Brian Barton smacked his first homerun of the season, a solo shot, to pull the Blue Crabs to within six. Southern Maryland then added four runs in the eighth to make it a ballgame. Pinch hitter Casey Benjamin drew a bases loaded walk for one run, which was followed by an RBI single from third baseman Brandon Pinckney to make the score 9-5. Barton added two more runs on a two-run single to pull the Blue Crabs to within 9-7. However, with runners at first and second and two out in the eighth, reliever Adam Thomas struck out catcher Christian Lopez to end the Southern Maryland's threat.

The Road Warriors finished the scoring with a solo homer by Sosa (10) in the ninth to make the final score 10-7.

The Road Warriors' offensive hero was Sosa who went 2-3 with a homer, two RBI, three runs scored and a stolen base. Mooney, Jordan, and designated hitter Marcos Cabral each had two hits for the visitors as well. Southern Maryland was led by Barton who went 3-4 with a homer, three RBI, a run scored, and a stolen base. First baseman Tanner Townsend chipped in with a 2-5 effort and a run scored.

The win went to Road Warriors reliever Brian McCullough (1-1) who came into the game in the fourth inning and allowed one run on three hits in 3.1 innings of work, while striking out four. The loss went to Blue Crabs starter Virgil Vasquez (3-5) who allowed five runs on six hits in six innings. He also walked three and struck out five.

The Blue Crabs will wrap-up their three-game series with the Road Warriors on Sunday at 2:05. The Blue Crabs will send righty Nick Green (4-2, 4.59 ERA) to the hill against right-hander Christopher Mason (1-1, 7.30 ERA) for the Road Warriors. The game can be heard on www.somdbluecrabs.com.
