Patriots Walk Off With 6-5 Win Over Ducks

Bridgewater, NJ- Fernando Cortez and Michael Hernandez each had RBI singles in the bottom of the ninth inning to lead the Somerset Patriots to a 6-5 win over the Long Island Ducks in front of 7,894 fans at TD Bank Ballpark on Saturday evening.

Trailing 5-4 in the bottom of the ninth, Cortez's single tied up the game and Hernandez won it with a walk off single to left field.

The Ducks took an early 1-0 lead on a solo homerun by Ray Navarette (9).

Matt Padgett (6) blasted a solo homerun in the fourth inning to give Long Island their second run on the game.

Somerset got on the board in the bottom half of the frame after Hernandez doubled and scored on an RBI single by Justin Huber to make the score 2-1.

Kennard Jones then led off the top of the fifth with a triple to center and scored on a single by Javier Colina to give the Ducks a 3-1 advantage.

Long Island continued to add to their lead in the top of the seventh inning. Colina and Matt Esquivel singled to get the rally started and J.R. House followed with a base hit to left field to score both runners and make the score 5-1.

The Patriots rallied to score three runs in the bottom of the eighth inning on an RBI single by Hernandez and Jeff Nettles and Huber both grounded out to bring home runs and cut the lead to 5-4.

Patriots reliever Jeff Kennard (1-2) picked up the win with a scoreless inning pitched. Bubbie Buzachero (3-2) suffered the loss, allowing five runs on six hits in 1.2 innings pitched.

The 2011 Somerset Patriots Season presented by Ford will continue at home on Sunday night as the Patriots take on the Long Island Ducks at 6:05 pm.
