Toledo Mud Hens News Release
Toledo, Ohio - In game two of the four game series at Victory Field between the Toledo Mud Hens and Indianapolis Indians the Mud Hens came away with a 11-3 win behind the long ball.
The Mud Hens utilized five home runs to take the victory in Indianapolis. Jeimer Candelario and Christin Stewart went back-to-back in the top of the eighth inning to retake the lead for Toledo, leading to the team's ninth win in eleven games.
Tuesday's game saw a pitcher's duel early on with both teams starting pitchers showing dominance. The first base runner of the game came in the bottom of the second inning when Indianapolis' Jason Martin drew a walk from Toledo starter Kyle Funkhouser, but a strikeout to the next batter ended the inning.
However, the Mud Hens made sure the first hit of the game was logged on their behalf. To begin the third inning, Grayson Greiner took an Alex McRae pitch over the left field wall for a home run, giving Toledo a 1-0 lead.
Toledo added insurance in the fourth inning. Frank Schwindel came to the plate following a walk to Stewart, blasting a two-run home run, his eighth of the season with Toledo, pushing the lead to 3-0.
The Indians cut into the lead in the sixth inning with Cole Tucker scoring on a Will Craig single. Later in the inning, Jason Martin would triple off the center field wall, despite a diving effort by Daz Cameron, scoring both Jake Elmore and Craig, tying the game at three.
The triple ended Funkhouser's night, bringing his line to 5.2 innings, giving up three runs on four hits and four walks while striking out seven. He was replaced out of the pen by John Schreiber who was able to get a fly out to end the inning. The lone out would be the end of Schreiber's evening with Bryan Garcia coming on in the seventh, tossing a hitless frame.
In the top of the eighth, Candelario came to the dish with Pete Kozma on first, crushing a two-run home run to reclaim the lead for Toledo. Stewart followed up with a solo shot of his own, to give Toledo three runs when two outs were logged in the inning, and a 6-3 lead.
For the bottom half of the eighth, the Mud Hens called on Matt Wotherspoon, making his Toledo debut on the mound. Wotherspoon struck out two in the eighth while sending the Indians down in order before closing down the game in the ninth.
With two outs in the top of the ninth, Kozma drew a walk before Chad Sedio sent his third home run in four games over the fence to extend the Toledo lead to 8-3. Three consecutive walks loaded the bases for Schwindel who singled for two-RBI followed by Jacob Robson who also knocked in an RBI to bring the score to 11-3.
What's Next:
The Mud Hens and Indians will reconvene on Wednesday for a 1:35 p.m. start in Indianapolis. Toledo is scheduled to send Spenser Watkins to the hill to face Indianapolis' Yefry Ramirez.
