Indianapolis Indians News Release
INDIANAPOLIS - Jason Martin hit a two-run, game-tying triple in the bottom of the sixth inning, but the Indianapolis Indians couldn't overcome five Toledo Mud Hens home runs in an 11-3 loss on Tuesday night. Alex McRae threw seven innings of three-run ball but had to settle for a no-decision.
Toledo (64-70) answered Indy's three-run sixth with three of its own in the eighth. Dovydas Neverauskas gave up a leadoff single and retired the next two batters before surrendering back-to-back home runs to Jeimer Candelario and Christin Stewart. The tiebreaking homer was Candelario's third go-ahead hit against the Indians in the last week.
The Mud Hens poured five more runs on the board in the ninth, all with two outs. Chad Sedio homered for a second time in the series to make it 8-3, and after three consecutive walks, Frank Schwindel lined a two-run single to left to push their lead to seven. Jacob Robson capped the frame with an RBI knock up the middle.
Indianapolis (64-70) fell behind 3-0 through the first five frames on a Grayson Greiner solo shot in the third and Schwindel two-run homer to center in the fourth. The Indians clawed back with three hits in the sixth off Kyle Funkhouser, the second being an RBI single from Will Craig to put the Tribe on the board. Two batters later, Martin snuck a line drive off and over the glove of Daz Cameron in deep center to bring home Elmore and Craig.
The Tribe's momentum came to a screeching halt in the final two innings of play as the visitors handed Indy its ninth loss by eight-plus runs this year. Neverauskas (L, 3-4) was dealt the defeat after yielding seven earned runs in 1.2 innings of relief. Bryan Garcia (W, 3-0) pitched a scoreless seventh to earn the win, and Matt Wotherspoon (S, 2) recorded the final six outs for Toledo to earn his first save in a Mud Hens uniform.
Craig's RBI in the sixth was his team-leading 72nd of the season.
The Indians and Mud Hens play the third game of their series on Wednesday at 1:35 p.m. ET. James Marvel (5-0, 2.72) will square off against Tim Adleman (8-4, 3.34).
