La Crosse Loggers News Release

LA CROSSE, WI - The 2013 La Crosse Loggers have had to battle adversity on multiple occasions this summer; Saturday was no different.

Starter Josh Frye (Long Beach State) surrendered a lead-off double to Kyle Haen (UW-Whitewater) on the very first pitch of the game. Haen advanced to third on an error by left-fielder Troy Traxler (Minnesota) and eventually scored on a single by center fielder Tyler Adams.

The Woodchucks (16-19) added another run in the top of the second. John Menken led off with a double and advanced to third on a sacrifice bunt by catcher Mike Mierow. Wisconsin's designated hitter John Roberts then singled to push the lead to 2-0.

Frye settled into his usual form after the early runs. The junior right-hander pitched seven innings and allowed just the two runs on eight hits and three walks. With his seven strikeouts, Frye now leads the NWL with 79.

La Crosse (21-13) finally got on the board in the bottom of the fifth. Hometown hero Bobby Juan (Minnesota) led off the frame with a single. Following a Nick Day (Iowa) sacrifice bunt, Juan's teammate at Minnesota, Troy Traxler, singled to put runners at the corners with one out. Catcher Austin Rei (Washington) then beat out a potential double play to score Juan and cut the lead to 2-1.

It wasn't until the seventh that the Lumbermen would get another base runner. Once again it was Juan that started the rally with a single. Day then worked the count full before sending Adam Kramer's 88th pitch over the right-field wall for a 2-run homer. It was Day's third big fly of the season and would wind up being the game-winner.

After Brandon DeFazio (San Diego) and Kevin Zak (Grand Valley State) reached on base-hits, Juan got another chance to do damage. The lefty connected on Alex Watson's very first pitch and the ball has yet to land.

The junior finished the night 3-4 with three RBI, three runs scored and the homer.

Frye picked up his sixth win of the year and lowered his ERA to an impressive 3.32 in the Loggers 6-2 victory.

With Lakeshore losing to Madison tonight, La Crosse sits just a half game out of first with one game left. With a win tomorrow and a Lakeshore loss, the Loggers will clinch the second half and take on the Madison Mallards in the first round of the playoffs.

The Loggers regular season finale will be tomorrow evening against the Woodchucks. Gates will open at 4:00 for the 5:05 scheduled start. Tune into Micah Schroeder at 4:30 for the Kwik Trip Pregame Show.
