Huskies Clinch Playoff Spot with Win over Honkers

(Rochester,MN)-- The Duluth Huskies clinched a playoff spot with an 8-7 win over the Rochester Honkers on Saturday, August 10, at Mayo Field.

Kyle Teaf started the top of the first inning with a single up the middle and came around to score on a two-run homerun from Trey Vavra as the Huskies took an early 2-0 lead.

Kevin Barker (UC Davis) and Mike Friel (Hofstra) started the bottom of the third inning with a pair of singles. Parker Sullivan (Minnesota State-Mankato) reached on an error and Barker came around to score and get the Honkers on the scoreboard. Friel and Sullivan came in to score on a two-out, two-run double from Max Murphy (Bradley) and Rochester grabbed its first lead at 3-2.

Teaf led-off the top of the fifth inning with a single. He moved to third base after a pair of walks before scoring on a sacrifice fly from Keith Curcio to tie the score at 3-3.

Tyler Baker (Wichita State) singled to center field in the bottom of the sixth inning, advanced to second base on an error, moved over to third on a wild pitch, and scored on a passed ball to give the Honkers a 4-3 lead after six innings.

Rochester added a pair of runs in the seventh as Murphy delivered a sacrifice fly and Jeff Campbell (North Dakota) picked up a RBI on an infield single with the bases loaded.

Christoph Bono started the top of the eighth inning by reaching on a walk, Teaf and Conor Szczerba collected back-to-back singles to score Bono and chase Honkers relief pitcher Hayden Edwards (Kansas) out of the game. Vavra and Curcio picked up a RBI each to tie the game at 6-6. Jered Meek added a two-run single to regain the lead for Duluth at 8-6.

Sullivan singled to left field with one out in the bottom of the eighth inning for Rochester. He stole second base and came around to score on a double from Kalei Hanawahine (Hawaii) to cut the deficit to one run at 8-7.

Jake Wakeland earned the win (1-0) for the Huskies as he allowed one run on one hit in an inning in relief. Seth Fuller (Black Hawk College) took the loss (3-4) for the Honkers. He allowed two runs on two hits in one inning of work. Nate Carter picked up his 12th save of the season as he pitched 1.1 scoreless innings. Campell added a scoreless ninth inning in relief for the Honkers.

Murphy led Rochester's offense with 3 RBI and Campbell picked up a pair of hits on the night.

The two teams will finish up the series and regular season on Sunday, August 11, at 1:05 p.m. Tyler Eppler (Sam Houston State) is scheduled to start for Rochester (10-24, 28-41.) Sunday will also be the Honkers fan appreciation day at Mayo Field.
