Mallards Begin Final Regular Season Series Tonight
August 10, 2013 - Northwoods League (Northwoods)
Madison Mallards News Release
Madison, WI - August 10, 2013. The final regular season series at the 'Duck Pond' of the 2013 season begins tonight at 6:05 pm between the Madison Mallards (19-16, 40-28) and the Lakeshore Chinooks (22-12, 43-25).
Mallards starter Taylore Cherry (North Carolina) had another rough outing last night in a 7-3 loss to the Mankato MoonDogs last night and only lasted three innings.
He allowed three walks in a two-run second and allowed three-straight two-out hits just one inning later to allow the MoonDogs to race out to a 5-0 lead. The MoonDogs would extend that lead to six in the fourth off of Mallards reliever Sam Forkert (Marian) on a John Michael Twichell (UT-Arlington) RBI single to right.
Back-to-back extra-base hits in the fifth allowed the Mallards to finally get on the scoreboard and Drew Weeks (North Florida) singled in a run and another run was scored on a MoonDogs error to pull within three. MoonDogs reliever Brock Dykxhoorn (West Virginia) didn't allow a hit over the last 4.2 innings and struck out eight to close things out for the MoonDogs.
Andrew Arenson (Carthage), a 6'6," 250-pound native of Naperville, Illinois, will start on the hill tonight for the Mallards and will make his fourth start. He went five innings and allowed one earned run or less in his first two starts but struggled last week against the Wisconsin Rapids Rafters. He went just three innings and allowed four runs (all earned) on seven hits while walking one. Through 14 innings this summer, the southpaw is 1-0 with a 3.21 ERA and has 15 strikeouts and 14 walks.
Five-Game Funk
The Chinooks bats have been largely silent over the past week besides a 16-3 win over the Rochester Honkers last night. In the last five games, the Chinooks are hitting only .201 and scored only six runs in the four games prior to last night's blowout. The offensive struggle has been offset by the pitching staff, however, as the Chinooks have only allowed 30 earned runs over the last 10 games.
Goldy Glad to Be Home
Mallards catcher Jason Goldstein (Illinois) is perhaps the happiest player to be back at the "Duck Pond." He is hitting .385 at home this season compared to just .259 on the road. On the team's six-game road trip that just ended last night in Mankato, Goldstein went 3-for-19 with no RBIs.
