Erie Otters News Release

Saginaw, Michigan - Four-straight wins, including back-to-back wins to start the weekend, have propelled the Erie Otters to the 8th Place ranking in the Ontario Hockey League's Western Conference, and with it, a spot in the playoff picture. Heading in the final game of a three-in-three in Saginaw on Sunday evening, the Otters looked to sweep the three game set, and move into sole-possession of 7th place in the West. Both the Spirit and Otters would switch out their goaltenders from Saturday night's contest, with Saginaw's Tristan Lennox and Erie's Marshall Nicholls getting the nods.

History would repeat itself in the first period, with the Saginaw Spirit striking first blood for the second night in a row. After taking a 4-2 shots advantage, Saginaw would strike for the next two shots. The tying shot would be the leading goal for the game, as Justin O'Donnell (3) would be the beneficiary of a tipped puck in front a high-traffic area in the low slot. Saginaw would take the baton from there, finishing with shots heavily in their favor 11-5, and taking a 1-0 lead - once again after 1 - into the second period.

Unlike Saturday night's game, the second period would not see a three-goal outburst from the Otters - but rather a three goal-deficit through 40 minutes. 1:57 into the new period, Dean Loukus (12) would receive a perfect pass in front from a terrific move by Sebastien Gervais. 2-0 Saginaw. While the Otters offense would have a much more solid frame in terms of production, it would be the Spirit that would once again find the back of the net, as Sabres' prospect Josh Bloom (19) would make it a 3-0 Spirit lead after two periods of play. Saginaw would outshoot Erie 14-12, and have a power play heading into the third period.

The story of the third period would be penalties, as time would be served for nine total penalties during the closing frame. During the times in the box, Connor Lockhart (16) would open scoring past the halfway mark of the third on four-on-four, but the Saginaw Spirit would net another pair late to take the win 5-1. Lennox would stop 26/27 to take the win; Saginaw's first at home of 2022.

Erie's win-streak would be halted at four with the regulation loss to Saginaw. After four-straight on the road, Erie returns home for its longest homestand of the season, starting on Wednesday, February 9 at 11 A.M. against the Owen Sound Attack. This is the first game of the season between the Midwest Division foes, with Erie hosting Owen Sound on back-to-back days.
