67's Sweep Home-And-Home with Niagara
February 6, 2022 - Ontario Hockey League (OHL)
Ottawa 67's News Release
Cam Tolnai decided to mark his 150th OHL game in style.
In the midst of a 20-game scoring drought - through no real fault of his own - Tolnai finally snapped his skid, with a goal that held up as the game-winner, in a 5-2 Ottawa 67's victory over the Niagara IceDogs.
Brady Stonehouse got the Barber Poles going, with Brad Gardiner, Tolnai, Will Gerrior, and Luca Pinelli notching the others. Max Donoso made 20 saves, in his second straight start, and win.
Unlike the last game between these two, it was the IceDogs that drew first blood. 10:59 in, when Daniel Michaud drove the net, and tipped home the opening marker for a 1-0 lead.
Niagara only had 16 seconds to enjoy their lead, however. Off the next faceoff, Anthony Costantini - playing in his 100th OHL game - slid the puck to Pinelli in the slot, who fired it towards the goal. Joseph Costanzo made a quick pad save, but Stonehouse was parked on the doorstep to cash in his 12th of the season, and tie the game.
Though the two teams headed to the second period in a tie hockey game, Ottawa found the go-ahead marker 2:49 into the frame. Steve Laforme made a great play to force a turnover at the IceDogs' blue line, and Gardiner scooped the puck, sniping home his third of the season, giving the 67's a 2-1 lead.
On the powerplay later in the frame Vinzenz Rohrer corralled the puck behind the Niagara goal, stepped out from the corner, and sent a gem of a cross-ice pass to Tolnai, whose one-timer ended his drought, and afforded the Barber Poles a two-goal cushion.
Pano Fimis got one back for the IceDogs early in the third, but again, Ottawa was able to launch a swift response. 3:14 later, Gerrior skated over the Niagara line, and snapped a quick shot that fooled Costanzo to restore the two-goal lead.
On the powerplay, with under six minutes to go, Pinelli took a feed from Thomas Sirman, and rifled his eighth of the year top shelf to seal the deal, and deliver the 67's a 5-2 win.
Game Notes:
Max Donoso has now won five of his last six starts.
Luca Pinelli is on a three-game point streak, with four in his last three.
Brad Gardiner logged his first career multi-point game, with a goal and an assist.
Cam Tolnai recorded his team-leading eighth multi-point game of the season.
Up Next: The 67's visit the Peterborough Petes, once again, on Thursday night at 7:05pm ET.
