Springfield, Mass. - The Lowell Lock Monsters scored five times on the power play and once shorthanded en route to a 7-2 victory over the Springfield Falcons in preseason action at the MassMutual Center on Tuesday night.
Penalties marked the pace in the first period, with the two teams combining for 11 power play opportunities. Springfield converted on one of those for the only goal of the opening frame. Zybnek Hrdel, a rookie from the QMJHL, potted the first goal of the game 11:55 in, banging home a rebound from right on the doorstep.
Lowell stayed out of the box in the second and their power play went to work. They tied it up with a 5-on-3 power play tally early in the second when Daniel Sisca redirected a Johnny Boychuk blast at 3:29. Boychuk ended the night with three helpers. Minutes later Springfield regained the lead with an unassisted goal by Doug Andress, only to be answered with three more tallies by Lowell. Rookie Pascal Pelletier notched his first of two in the period at 11:43. He batted in his own rebound at 18:07 on the man advantage for the Monsters first lead of the game. With just 15 seconds remaining in the stanza, Steve Saviano chipped in Lowell's fourth of the period to make it 4-2 heading into the dressing room.
The Lock Monsters added three more in the final period, all via special teams. Mikko Viitanen scored on a wraparound, shorthanded just 2:32 in. Daniel DaSilva potted a power play goal just over a minute later, and David Svagrovsky accumulated the final lamp lighter of the night, also on the power play. The Lock Monsters finished 5-for-14 on the man advantage.
The Lock Monsters will play one more pre-season match against the Hartford Wolf Pack on Saturday, October 1st at the Champions Skating Center in Cromwell, Connecticut.
Only 17 days remain until Opening Night for the Lowell Lock Monsters, as they battle the Manchester Monarchs on Friday, October 14th at the Tsongas Arena.
