Lincoln southpaw tosses 8 shutout innings

LINCOLN, NE - The Lincoln Saltdogs only scored one run on Monday, but it was just enough as they beat St. Paul 1-0 at Haymarket Park. The win keeps the Saltdogs tied for second place in the American Association North.
Lincoln starter Vince Davis (5-4) and St. Paul starter Luis Villareal (3-4) engaged in a classic pitchers' duel, putting up matching zeroes on the scoreboard through the first five innings. Both lefties allowed just three hits, but the Saltdogs broek through in the bottom of the sixth. Manny Rodriguez walked to lead off the inning, stole second, and went to third on Dustin Yount's single. Kit Pellow followed with a fly ball to left field, and Rodriguez raced home on the sacrifice fly to score the only run of the contest. Davis pitched eight scoreless innings, striking out four batters, before giving way to new Saltdogs closer Matt Hammons. The former St. Paul Saint pitched around a walk and a hit batter in the ninth to record his first save for Lincoln. For St. Paul, Villareal allowed just the one run in six innings to take the tough-luck loss.
Offensively, no Saltdog had more than one hit, but Rodriguez has now hit safely in all five games he's played for Lincoln. The Dogs have only seven hits so far in the first two games of the series, and Rodriguez is the only runner in two games to advance past first base.
The Saltdogs and Saints play game three of their four-game series Tuesday night at 7:05. Brian Campbell is scheduled to make the start for Lincoln.
