St. Paul Saints News Release
LINCOLN, NE (August 11, 2008) - For just the 11th time in franchise history the St. Paul Saints dropped a 1-0 game losing to the Lincoln Saltdogs on Monday night at Haymarket Park.
The Saints brought back a familiar face, re-signing Luis Villarreal after his month in Mexico, and he was tremendous on Monday. He gave the Saints six solid innings and through the first five allowed just one man to touch second base. In the sixth, however, he walked the lead off man Manny Rodriguez. He stole second and moved to third on a single to left by Dustin Yount. Kit Pellow followed with a fly ball to medium left, which Adam Hale caught, but his throw didn't have enough on it and Rodriguez scored the only run of the game. Villarreal went 6.0 innings allowing one run on three hits while walking two and striking out five.
On the flip side Saltdogs starter Vince Davis was masterful in his eight shutout innings of work. The Saints started the night off with a single by Ron Fenwick, but Mojica followed by forcing Fenwick at second and Pichi Balet grounded into a double play to end the inning.
The Saints managed just one man to reach second against Davis and that occurred in the seventh. Mojica led off with a single to center. He stole second as Balet struck out, but Mojica made a costly base running mistake after that. He attempted to steal third, but Davis stepped off the mound and threw to third erasing Mojica. Davis went 8.0 shutout innings allowing thee hits while walking two and striking out five.
The Saints made some noise in the ninth when Heath Keel led off with a walk against former Saints closer Matt Hammons, who was signed on Monday. Steve Butler then tried to sacrifice, but bunted back to Hammons who threw to second erasing Keel. Fenwick struck out for the second out of the inning and then Hammons hit Mojica putting runners at first and second. Balet, however, ended the game by flying out to right.
The same two teams meet Tuesday night in game three of the four game series at Haymarket Park at 7:05 p.m. The Saints send RHP Dustin Bolton (4-7, 4.84) to the mound against Saltdogs RHP Brian Campbell (7-4, 4.32). The game can be heard on Relevant Radio 1330.
