MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. - The Carolina League has recognized the efforts of Pelicans' third baseman Donell Linares over the last week by naming him Carolina League Player of the Week. Linares becomes the second Pelican in the last three weeks to earn the honor.

Linares, 25, hit .426 (12-for-26) with four runs scored, a double, a triple and eight RBIs while striking out only twice for the week of May 25-31. On Saturday, May 30, he went 4-for-5 including a pair of RBIs and runs scored against the Wilmington Blue Rocks. With his fourth inning single the following day, he extended his hit-streak to a Pelicans' season-high eight games. Over his last eight games, Linares is hitting .455, and the surge has raised his average from .229 to .271. He has four multi-hit games over the span, giving him 11 on the season.

The Braves signed the Havana, Cuba native as a free agent on June 20, 2008. The 2009 season is his first full campaign of professional baseball. Linares played in 21 games for the Braves in the Dominican Summer League last summer and hit .266 with a pair of home runs and 11 RBIs. With the Pelicans this season, he has five home runs, 33 RBIs and a .424 slugging percentage to go with his .271 average.

Jason Heyward was the first Pelican to garner Carolina League Player of the Week honors this season for the week ending May 17. The Pelicans are in action tonight as they open a series with the Winston-Salem Dash at Wake Forest Baseball Park in Winston-Salem, NC at 7:00.
