THE HILLCATS: Lynchburg defeated Potomac 6-1 yesterday to take the rubber match of their three-game series...The win moves the Hillcats back to a season-high 15 games over .500 and gives them a five-game lead for first place in the Northern Division and the best record in the league...Tonight is game one of a three-game series at Frederick and a seven-game road trip...
VS. FREDERICK: Lynchburg took two out of three from Frederick when they met earlier this season at City Stadium and split four-game series two weeks ago in Frederick to move to 4-3 against the Keys...Last season the Keys won the season series against the Cats 12-7 and went 6-4 at home...Lynchburg though holds the all-time advantage 146-132 and they are 70-68 at Harry Grove Stadium...
MARVELOUS MAY: In the second month of the season the Hillcats posted a 19-9 record...They lost only one series (7-1-1) in the month, had a 3.37 team ERA and batted .263...
DEJA VU ALL OVER AGAIN: The Hillcats are back in Frederick just 10 days after they were last here...The Cats are in the midst of playing 23 of 26 against the North that includes ten games against the Keys...This series is the second of four series in a row (13 games) against Northern Division foes...
WHAT HAPPENED ON THE HOMESTAND: Lynchburg went 5-1 on the six-game homestand and won both of the two series played...They only trailed one time in the six contests and outscored Salem and Potomac by a combined score of 28-8...The Hillcats pitching staff posted an ERA of 1.17 over this stretch, allowing just seven earned runs in 54 innings pitched...The Cats improved to a league best 19-7 at home this season at Calvin Falwell Field...
KING OF THE MOUNTAIN: Potomac narrowed Lynchburg's lead in the Northern Division to a half a game on May 21st heading into a weekend series with the Hillcats...The Cats then played six of their next nine games against the P-Nats...Lynchburg won four of the six games between the two teams and went 7-2 over that stretch to extend their lead in the division to five full games...The Hillcats have won all three series against the Nationals and are now 7-3 on the season against the Nats...
CATCHING THE WORM: With their series opening win against Potomac on Friday night, the Hillcats improved to 14-1 in series openers this season...They have now won 13 in a row and are 7-0 in game one contests on the road...
SERIES STREAK: The Hillcats have not lost a series since May 1st-3rd when they dropped two out of three at home to Kinston...That is also the only series they have dropped at home, where they are 7-1 in sets thus far this season after their series win over Potomac...Since the series loss to the K-Tribe the Cats have gone eight series without a loss, going 7-0-1 over that stretch...
DURHAM DIALED IN: UTIL Miles Durham extended his current hitting streak to nine games yesterday, setting a new mark for his his longest of the season...Over that time he is 14-for-37 (.378) with three doubles, two home runs, seven RBI and eight runs scored...His two home runs on the previous homestand both proved to be game winners...Since his average dipped to .238 on May 2nd, Durham has hit .347 (35-for-101) with eight doubles, six home runs, 21 RBI and 20 runs scored in 25 games played to raise his average to .297...He is batting .360 with men in scoring position as well this season...
POSITIVE CHI: LHP Chi-Hung Cheng worked five and 2/3 scoreless innings yesterday to earn his fifth win of the season for the Hillcats, tied for the most on the team...In his last two starts the lefty has worked 10 and 2/3 scoreless frames and he not allowed a run in three outings against Potomac this season (nine and 2/3 innings)...Outside of one rocky start at Kinston (seven runs allowed in three innings), Cheng has been outstanding this season for Lynchburg...He has not allowed more than three earned runs in any other appearance and has 2.37 earned run average this season without that start...The Cats are 9-2 in games Cheng has thrown in this season...
TONIGHT'S OPPOSING PITCHER: RHP Pedro Beato was selected in the first round (32nd overall pick) of the 2006 draft by the Orioles out of St. Petersburg College...He made his professional debut that year and went 3-2 with a 3.47 ERA in 14 games (10 starts) for Short Season Low-A Aberdeen...He advanced to full season Low-A Delmarva the next season and posted a 7-8 mark with a 4.05 ERA in 27 starts...Last year he spent the majority of the season with Frederick at the High-A level and went 4-10 with a 5.85 ERA in 19 starts...He also made two rehab starts with the GCL Orioles and he went 0-1 with a 4.00 ERA...This season he has returned to Frederick and has gone 3-3 with a 4.13 ERA in nine starts... Last season Beato made four starts against Lynchburg and went 1-2 with a 3.72 ERA...He has also made two starts against the Hillcats this season, going 1-1 with a 3.75 ERA...He beat the Cats on May 21st in Frederick by allowing just two runs in six innings of work...
