Charleston Dirty Birds News Release
The West Virginia Power lost 12-8 to the Lexington Legends at Appalachian Power Park on Monday night. The Power allowed seven runs in the top of the ninth inning and surrendered a three-run lead in their second straight loss to the Legends.
Lexington built a 3-0 lead against West Virginia starter Phillip Irwin after two innings, keyed by two hits from Jose Altuve. The Power, however, countered with two runs in the home half of the third on a home run by Evan Chambers and one in the fourth on a solo home run from Jesus Brito to tie the game at three.
West Virginia captured the lead in the fifth on a solo home run by Jarek Cunningham. The Power infielder drove a 3-2 pitch from Legends starter Tanner Bushue over the left field wall to put West Virginia up 4-3.
In the sixth, Rogelio Noris hit his 12th home run of the season to extend the advantage. One inning later, Elevys Gonzalez doubled and scored on an error to create a three run edge at 6-3.
Lexington began its comeback in the top of the eighth, scoring two on a home run by Jacob Goebbert. The Power answered with a pair in the bottom of the inning, sending Marc Baca to the mound in the ninth with an 8-5 lead as the right-hander attempted to gain his fifth save.
The Legends scored seven runs in the ninth on four hits, four walks and one error. With the bases loaded and two runs already in, Baca walked Kody Hinze to tie the game at eight. Jonathan Meyer followed with a two-run single that gave Lexington the lead for good. The Legends would send 11 men to the plate in all, adding two additional insurance runs to close the scoring.
Baca (3-2) was charged with a blown save and took the loss, while Wander Alvino (4-2) picked up the victory. Four different Power batters had two hits each, with Chambers and Gonzalez driving in a pair of runs each. Altuve led Lexington with four hits and three different players drove in multiple runs for the Legends.
West Virginia has Tuesday off and opens a five-game series at Delmarva on Wednesday evening. The Power return to Appalachian Power Park on Tuesday, July 20, to take on the Savannah Sand Gnats at 7:05 pm.
