Claws Lose First Series of the Season, Fall to Delmarva 3-2

LAKEWOOD, NJ - The BlueClaws offensive woes continued Monday afternoon, as Lakewood dropped the last game of a five-game homestand to the Delmarva Shorebirds 3-2.
The BlueClaws have scored just twelve runs in their last six games (2-4). Delmarva (9-9) took three out of five from the Claws, giving Lakewood (12-6) their first series loss of the season (10-1-9).
The only positive news for the BlueClaws came in the first at-bat of the game, as Jiwan James singled to extend his hit streak to 20 games, one shy of the team record set in 2001.
Trailing 3-0 into the ninth, the BlueClaws mounted their comeback. Jonathan Villar led off with a triple, and came home on a Leandro Castro single. Castro then scored on a Jonathan Singleton base hit to get the Claws within one.
All-Star closer Josh Dowdy slammed the door from there, getting two quick outs. After issuing a walk to Adam Buschini, Dowdy got pinch hitter Alan Schoenberger to ground out to the mound to seal the win and his 15th save of the season.
Jonathan Pettibone (3-4) pitched well for Lakewood, letting up just two runs in 6 2/3 innings. Delmarva starter Brent Allar (2-0), making his first start of the season, was also excellent allowing just two hits in a career-high five innings.
The Shorebirds broke a scoreless tie in the fifth, as Garabez Rosa doubled in the first run and Brian Conley brought in the second on a sac-fly to give the Birds a 2-0 advantage.
Lakewood's best chance to answer came in the sixth against reliever Nick Haughian. Anthony Hewitt led off the inning with a single, and Villar added a base hit with one out to put runners on the corners.
Castro then flew out to right, but Villar couldn't make it back to first in time and was doubled off, costing Lakewood a run and keeping the score at 2-0.
Delmarva added an important insurance run in the eighth on a Justin Dalles sac-fly to push their lead to 3-0.
Tuesday is an off-day for Lakewood, and Wednesday they start a five-game series at Kannapolis. RHP Josh Zeid (5-3, 3.21) goes up against Intimidators RHP Matt Hopps (1-7, 5.50).
