Hagerstown Suns News Release
The Hagerstown Suns (7-12, 43-36) and the Greenville Drive (13-6, 49-40) split the decisions in a double-header at Fluor Field in Greenville, SC on Monday.
Game one picked up in the top of the fourth inning after rain suspended the contest on Sunday. The score was still 0-0 when the game was washed out going into the top of the fourth, but Greenville wasted no time getting on the board on Monday.
In the bottom of the fourth inning, Reymond Fuentes singled off Suns reliever Luis Garcia (1-2) with two outs. The very next batter, third baseman Michael Almanzar, doubled to left field, driving in Fuentes and giving the Drive a 1-0 lead.
Greenville added three more on three hits and an error in the bottom of the seventh inning, and the Suns offense never really got into gear, falling 4-0.
Garcia took the loss, allowing one run in three innings of work. Shane Erb and Wanel Vazquez each tossed an inning in relief for the Suns as well.
Chris Court (3-0) earned the win with four shut-out innings for the Drive.
The starting pitchers for the game, Graham Hicks for Hagerstown and Pete Ruiz for the Drive, each tossed three shut-out innings on Sunday before the inclement weather hit Greenville.
Game two was a very different story, as the Suns got on the board right away. Justin Bloxom homered after a Jeff Kobernus single in the top of the first inning, putting the Suns out to a 2-0 lead.
Marcus Jones' third home run of the season, and second of the series, extended the Suns lead to 3-0 in the top of the second inning.
In the bottom of the second, Greenville came back with one run on two hits against Hagerstown starter Josh Smoker (2-9).
Adrien Nieto extended the Suns lead to 5-1 in the top of the fourth with a towering home run to right field, the first of the season for the Hagerstown catcher.
Smoker did allow two more runs in the bottom of the fifth inning, but the lefty got through the frame, the Suns held on for a 5-4 win and Smoker got the victory.
Rob Wort earned his seventh save of the season for Hagerstown after allowing one run in two innings of work. The right hander struck out three, and the lone run he allowed came on a two-out home run by Jeremy Hazelbaker in the bottom of the seventh inning.
The Suns have an off day on Tuesday, but will return to action against the Rome Braves on Wednesday at Municipal Stadium. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 PM and gates will open at 6:00.
