ROME, Ga. - Josh Romanski penned 7.2 brilliant innings, and Charleston cut down the game-tying run at third base in the bottom of the ninth inning in a thrilling 3-2 win over the Rome Braves in South Atlantic League action at State Mutual Stadium Monday evening.
Charleston takes two of the five contests in the series - and finish 2-11 at State Mutual Stadium this season -- in improving to 8-11, 39-49 overall, while Rome falls to 10-9, 40-48 overall.
Romanski (4-2) won his third straight start for the first time in his career and defeated the Braves for the second time this season in the process. The Corona, Calif native gave up just one run on five hits, while walking none and sinking six. Even though he left with the lead, Rome's half of the ninth proved to be an adventure.
With two outs in the frame and a 3-1 RiverDogs lead, Rome's Ramon Flores roped a ball off Francisco Gil that hit off the top of the left field wall and caromed back into play allowing Christian Bethancourt to score all the way from first, but in attempting to take third base, the relay throw from left fielder Neil Medchill to shortstop Kelvin Castro to third baseman Emerson Landoni resulted in Flores being tagged out after a head-first slide to end the game with a 3-2 RiverDogs triumph.
Gil surrendered the unearned run, made possible by a leadoff Charleston error, but hung on to notch his third save of thea year.
A scoreless tie lasted until the fourth inning, when Rome's Todd Cunningham fouled off four consecutive 3-2 offerings from Romanski before clouting his first SAL home run inside the left-field pole for a 1-0 Braves lead.
Kyle Higashioka answered with a solo home run of his own against Rome's All-Star Chris Masters in the fifth inning - his sixth four-bagger of the year -- to knot the score at 1-1.
Masters worked 5.0 innings in a no-decision, with one run allowed on six hits with no walks and three strikeouts.
DeAngelo Mack and Jimmy Paredes were issued consecutive walks to start the sixth from reliever Wilton Estevez, and Estevez's errant pickoff throw to bounced into centerfield, moving Mack to third and Paredes to second with nobody out. J.R. Murphy then looped a RBI single to right field to give Charleston a 2-1 lead, and Medchill's double play groundout scored Paredes for the 3-1 margin.
Paredes collected his second multi-hit game in a row, going 2-for-3 with a run, while Rob Lyerly registered a 2-for-4 performance with his 27th double to rank third in the league. The Indian Trail, N.C. native finished five-game set 9-for-18 with a home run, three doubles, three RBI and four runs scored.
Charleston enjoys an off-day on Tuesday before commencing a five-game homestand against the Augusta GreenJackets, a San Francisco Giants affiliate, on Wednesday at 7:05 p.m. The RiverDogs plan to pitch right-hander Jose Ramirez (2-4, 3.42 ERA) against Augusta's All-Star right-hander Jorge Bucardo (8-4, 2.45 ERA)
