Legends Rally in Eighth for 7-5 Win
May 5, 2016 - South Atlantic League (SAL1)
Lexington Legends News Release
A four-run rally in the eighth inning gave the Lexington Legends a come-from-behind 7-5 victory over the Delmarva Shorebirds Thursday night at Whitaker Bank Ballpark.
The Legends scored a run in the first inning on singles by Cody Jones and D.J. Burt, a ground out by Samir Duenez and a sacrifice fly by Chase Vallot, but Delmarva came back with two runs in the fourth.
Cedric Mullins reached first on an error by third baseman Travis Maezes, moved to second on a wild pitch and to third on a ground out by Ricardo Andujar. Mullins scored when D.J. Stewart grounded out to shortstop. Alex Murphy followed with a triple and came home on a single by Yermin Mercedes.
The Shorebirds added two runs in the fifth. With two outs and no one on base, Drew Turbin singled and moved to second on a wild pitch. Mullins struck out, but strike three was in the dirt, and when Vallot's throw went past first base for an error, Turbin scored and Mullins took second. Andujar then singled, scoring Mullins, and Delmarva led 4-1.
A two-run homer by Maezes in the bottom of the fifth cut the lead to one, and the score remained 4-3 until the eighth. With one out, Jones singled and stole second. Burt grounded out, but Duenez singled, scoring Jones with the tying run. After Duenez stole second and Vallot walked, Amalani Fukofuka doubled down the right field line, scoring Duenez with the go-ahead run. Ben Johnson's infield single scored Vallot, and Fukofuka came home when third baseman Andujar threw past first for an error.
The Shorebirds scored one in the ninth and had the tying run on base when reliever Torey Deshazier struck out Mullins to end the game.
Franco Terrero (1-0), who relieved starter Foster Griffin in the sixth, picked up the win. Deshazier got his first save of the season. Griffin worked five and two-thirds innings, and all four runs scored against him were unearned.
Bobby Strader (0-2), a Louisville native who pitched in college for the University of Louisville, took the loss after replacing starter Reid Love at the start of the seventh inning.
The series is even at one win apiece and concludes Friday night. Game time is 7:05 p.m.
