Kannapolis Cannon Ballers News Release
KANNAPOLIS, N.C. - The Intimidators suffered their first shutout loss of the season, falling to the Hagerstown Suns, 7-0, on a rainy Thursday night at Intimidators Stadium supported by Carolinas HealthCare System. Kannapolis (12-15) saw it's season-best 4-game winning streak come to an end while allowing 17 hits to the Suns.
Hagerstown's Rhett Wiseman and Edwin Lora each finished 4-for-5 at the plate, while Lora drove in a game-high four runs and belted two doubles to pace the Suns offense. Wiseman tripled and scored three runs as part of his offensive outburst.
Andrew Lee (2-0) earned the win, tossing 5.0 shutout innings while limiting Kannapolis to two hits and no walks. He struck out six before turning the ball over to Matthew Crownover, who spun the final 4.0 innings for the save (1).
Intimidators starting pitcher Chris Comito (0-1) made his Class A debut, giving up six run (five earned) on eight hits over 2 and 2/3 innings. Comito, the White Sox 15th round selection in the June 2015 First-Year Player Draft, joined Kannapolis earlier in the week from Extended Spring Training along with the 30th round pick from last year's draft, Jack Charleston. Charleston tossed a scoreless sixth and seventh inning, striking out two and working around four hits in his Class A debut.
The Suns (18-8) scored the game's first run in the top of the first when Victor Robles led off the game with a base hit and later scored on an Ian Sagdal groundout. Lora added a 2-run double as part of a 3-run second inning to built the Suns lead, 4-0. In the third, Wiseman singled to cash Kelvin Gurierrez, and Lora drove in Wiseman to add to Hagerstown's advantage, 6-0. Lora doubled home Wiseman in the fifth for the game's final tally.
Kannapolis managed a season-low three hits on the night while suffering its first shutout loss since Sep. 1, 2015, when the team lost 6-0 to the Suns in Hagerstown. The Intimidators allowed 17 hits on the night, one shy of the season-high 18 by Delmarva on April 24.
The Intimidators wraps up this 3-game series against the Suns on Friday at 7:05 p.m. as RHP Zach Thompson ( 1-2, 5.01 ERA) starts for Kannapolis against Hagerstown's RHP Pedro Avila (1-0, 2.25 ERA). Gates open on Friday at 6 p.m. for Freebie Friday featuring a bacon giveaway to the first 500 fans courtesy of Smithfield.
