PREVIEW: The Shorebirds continue a seven game road trip with three contests in Lexington, Kentucky against the Lexington Legends. The Legends are Class A Affiliates of the Kansas City Royals. The Shorebirds finished their rain-shortened homestand 4-2 and have won 11 of their last 15 games (including yesterday, 7-4) since beginning the season 4-6. The 'Birds split a double-header with Southern Division leading Charleston on Monday to earn a split of the four game series. Lexington has really struggled after opening the year 5-1. They are 5-15 with only one series win since then. This is the only series scheduled in the first half between Delmarva and Lexington, but the Legends will come to Delmarva the last weekend in August.
TONIGHT'S OPPONENT: Left-hander Foster Griffin takes the ball for the Legends. Griffin was selected by the Kansas City Royals 28th overall in the 2014 MLB First Year Player Draft. MLB.com rated Griffin as the 9th best prospect in the KC farm system. He graduated from The First Academy in Orlando, Florida where he had a 1.55 ERA and 99 strikeouts in 58.2 innings as a senior. He passed on his commitment to Ole Miss by signing with the Royals. He went 4-6 for LEX last year.
ROSTER OVERVIEW: Delmarva opens the year with each of the Orioles' First Round Draft picks last summer in shortstop Ryan Mountcastle and outfielder D.J. Stewart. According to Baseball America, the Shorebirds have five of the top 30 prospects in Baltimore's farm system on their roster. Aside from Mountcastle and Stewart, pitchers Ofelky Peralta (#17) and Garrett Cleavinger (#26), along with catcher Alex Murphy (#27), are among the O's most highly-touted farmhands. RHP's Christian Turnipseed and Ryan Meisinger have both posted solid numbers as well.
