RiverDogs Crank out 11 Hits in 8-3 Win over Power

CHARLESTON, SC - The Charleston RiverDogs were lifted to an 8-3 victory over the West Virginia Power, behind an 11 hit parade, featuring a season-high seven extra base hits from five different RiverDogs. Charleston was thirsty for another home win Thursday night as they evened the series 1-1, in front of 4,271 strong, at Joseph P. Riley, Jr. Park.

Hits and runs were abundant in the first third of the game for both teams Thursday night, as 10 runs combined were scored through the first three innings.  West Virginia centerfielder Tito Polo began the game with a leadoff homerun on the second pitch he saw to set the offensive pace of the game.

In the bottom of the first inning, the RiverDogs evened things up with a run of their own, as second baseman Hoy Jun Park reached on a triple to right-center field and was driven in on a sacrifice fly by Chris Gittens.

West Virginia again scored a lone run in the top of the second, after Ryan Nagle scored on an Anyelo Gomez (1-1) wild pitch. Nagle doubled with one out and reached third on a two-out single from Alfredo Reyes, then scored on the wild pitch.

Connor Spencer began the second inning with his first of two doubles, and later scored off of a two-out two bagger from Charleston third baseman Angel Aguilar.  RiverDogs backstop Eduardo Navas found his way on base with a walk, which led to two more runs being driven in by the RiverDogs' leadoff man, Jeff Hendrix, who sent a two RBI double into center field, making it 4-2 Charleston.

The power brought the game back within a run in the top of the third off a solo home run to left off the bat of Ke'Bryan Hayes, his third of the season and second of the series.

The RiverDogs struck for three more runs in the bottom half of the frame. Gittens led the inning off with a hotshot single into left field, followed by a double from Connor Spencer, and a walk issued to Kyle Holder. Gittens and Spencer were driven in off of a Carlos Vidal 2 RBI single to right. Holder then scored on a Logan Sendelbach (2-1) wild pitch, giving Charleston a 7-3 lead.

The RiverDogs snuck in their eighth run in the bottom of the 8th inning on a solo home run from Jhalan Jackson, his first of the season.

Daris Vargas entered for the final four innings in relief of Gomez, earning his second save, giving up no runs on two hits, a walk, and four strikeouts.

Ballpark Fun

The RiverDogs celebrated Cinco de Mayo at The Joe as they kicked off the festivities with a Budweiser Thirsty Thursday. The club also congratulated the Charleston County School District Teacher of the Year who was announced in-between innings and awarded a new car.

Upcoming

The RiverDogs will be back Friday night for the rubber game against the West Virginia Power. Charleston will roll RHP Christian Morris (0-0, 0.00) out on the mound against West Virginia's RHP Bret Helton (1-1,5.24). First pitch is set for 7:05pm. Gear up for another ISHPI Red Shirt Friday with a Home Telecom Fireworks postgame show. Shhhh it's also Darius Rucker's Surprise 50th birthday party, so don't tell him.
